Chapter # 08

(i) (a) Define Activation energy. Give its relation with the speed of reaction.

(b) For the reaction A+B ---------> Product, threshold energy is 40 KJ/mole. The average internal
energy of the reactant is 10 KJ/mole. Calculate its activation energy.

(c) How are the nature and surface area of the reactant related to the rate of reaction?

(ii) Determine the order of reaction from the following data A+B -----------> Product

A B Rate
Mole/dm3 Mole/dm3 Mole/dm3 sec
0.1 0.1 8x10-4
0.2 0.1 16x10-4
0.1 0.2 16x10-4

(iii) The rate constant for the reaction 2NO2 --------> 2NO + O2 is 1.8x10-8 dm3/mole. Sec .If the
initial concentration of NO2 is 2M, what is the rate of reaction?

(iv) Name the physical methods along with the observed physical properties for determining the
rate of reaction. Describe the method for determining the rate of reaction by physical or chemical
means.

(v) Name the factors, which affect the rate of reaction and discuss each of them.

(vi) Write notes on each of the following:

(i) Fast reactions (ii) Slow reactions

(iii) Moderate reactions (IV) Positive catalyst
