n + l Rule/ Wise-Wesser Rule:s

This law consists of two parts:

First Part:

“Electron will first enter in those orbital which has the least value of n + l .”

Example:

Orbital n value l value n + l value

3d 3 2 3+2 = 5
3p 3 1 3+1 =4

Hence, electron will enter first in 3p orbital as its n+l value is less than n+l value of 3d.

Second Part:

“If the n+l value of two orbital are same then electron will first enter in that orbital which has least
value of n.”

Orbital n value l value n + l value

4s 4 0 4+0 = 4
3p 3 1 3+1 =4

Hence, electron will enter first in 3p orbital because its n value is less than that of 4s.
