RANGE DESIGN PROJECT

Project by : Sugumar V

Project focus : Range of wine bottle holders

College : NIFT, Bengaluru

INTRODUCTION

Products are designed and manufactured for various reasons and each one of
them has their own function. Few products are designed to solve a problem, few are
designed to improve our life and few are for adding value like a painting or a really
expensive car. This project is about designing a range of bar table accessory which has
adding value to an expensive wine bottle as a primary function, the wine bottle holder.

The whole project started from understanding the concept of range design and
how it is different from a design collection. A range, defined as a word is a set of different
things of the same general type and a collection is just a group of things. In design terms, a
range is a set of objects similar in function or similar in nature but is a modification or a
variation from each other, for example a set of cricket bats. Whereas a collection is a group
of different products designed for different purposes which are related to each other, for
example, a cricket kit.

It was decided to choose the product around a table which are not usually
explored to do this project. Wine accessories are something designed to do a very specific
function and using those increases the value of the whole environment. They are not seen
everywhere, not in all the tables that has wine, they are found in high-end bars and at the
households of wine enthusiasts who respects and values a bottle of wine. Wine accessories
include glasses, bottle openers, coolers, decanters, funnels, racks, collar, stopper, thief, wine
bottle holder, aerator, stirrer etc. Out of all these, wine bottle holders are the ones which
require a functional and aesthetic design approach. They are used to show off an expensive
bottle of wine and as an attractive conversation piece on the countertop or table while their
guests are enjoying wine. Their design can’t over power the wine bottle or take away the
attention rather it should increase the value of the wine bottle. Along with this, it should
balance the wine bottle perfectly. Considering the situations around a bar table, the design
should make sure that its function is done properly and shouldn’t give a chance for any
condition where a wine bottle will be damaged or a condition where using them requires a
lot of care.

Now that there is a product, the next step in the design process is finding an
inspiration, a story from where the design of the product comes from. After surfing a lot, a
story which will go along with a product like wine bottle holder was found. Oriel, which
means ‘golden’ in Latin, is the name of the story I chose and is going to be the inspiration for
the design[ CITATION mel19 \l 16393 ]. Here is a short description about the story:

With deep-rooted curiosity, Oriel serves as the material connection between our
physical and emotional selves. Without feeding into our inhibitions, we curate a space where
both love and lust have a home. Abstract and painterly patterns service our creative thinking
in the form of therapeutic emotional release. Earthen inspirations find peace nestled among
soft and effortless curves. A rich yet comforting colour palette temps us with an inherent
audaciousness. Natural materials like marble are given a soft-spoken intimacy when paired
with brushed metal and tonal coloured glass. As we take a more inclusive look at design,
making good use of “undesirables” like material offcuts allows regenerated objects to
embody modern luxury

The colour palette, design elements and the materials were chosen according to the
story. The colour palette was set to rustic shades. The design consists of solid and rigid
elements. Brass was the material chosen because of its resemblance to gold and goes more
with the colour palette and the story, giving the earthen, rustic feels.

DESIGN BRIEF
To design a range of wine
bottle holder inspired from a
story that goes with both
commercial space and a personal
space. The function of the
product should be kept in mind and the design shouldn’t triumph over the wine bottle.
RESEARCH
Many wine enthusiasts like single wine bottle holders because they provide an attractive
conversation piece on the countertop or table while their guests are enjoying wine.  There
are many types of single wine bottle holders available from artisans and from online
retailers.

Why a single wine bottle holder?

A single wine bottle holder is a decorative way to show off a prized bottle of wine.  The wine
bottle holder might be minimalistic - intended to display the fine wine. Or, you may prefer a
bolder wine holder - a conversation piece beside the cheese tray. Wine bottle holders,
which can be constructed from wood, wire, plastic, or all of the above, have become very
popular home decor items.  Also, a wine bottle holder can be an easy, quick gift for the wine
lover who “has it all.”

Few things to consider about wine bottle holders:

Constructi on
Wine bottle displays can be constructed from wood, wire, plastic, wire, resin or a
combination all of the above .

Aestheti c

Since wine bottle holders are home decor, the design aesthetic is a big focus.  Consider who
will be using the wine bottle holder. Do they intend to use the product seasonally or
throughout the year? Do they like funny/quirky things or are they more traditional?

Space
If the apartment dweller or homeowner has limited space, then a large single wine bottle
holder might take up too much space.  They may prefer a wall-mounted item.

Quality
Since these items fall into the kitchen home decor category, they are typically low to
moderately priced.  One-of-a-kind wine bottle holders can be premium priced. However,
since those items are very specific we limit our reviews to items that are mass-produced but
not low quality.

A wine bottle holder is not a necessity for a wine collector.  Its purpose is to show off a
bottle of wine or to serve as a conversation piece in its own right.  Most often, single wine
bottle holders serve as a unique piece of art reflecting the style and aesthetic of the wine
owner. There’s not a single, go-to brand of wine bottle holder.

Precauti ons to consider

The wine bottle holder exposes the wine bottle to light, heat, and vibration, all of which can
affect the wine.[ CITATION kno19 \l 16393 ]

Product study:
Wine bottles:

When it comes to wine storage, you want to choose wine racks that will properly store your
bottles. Unfortunately, wine bottle sizes & dimensions are not always consistent. The most
common wine bottle dimensions are 3 – 3.2 inches in diameter & roughly 12 inches in
height. Champagne bottles are slightly larger, closer to 3.5 inches in diameter & 12.5 inches
in height.[ CITATION Vig20 \l 16393 ]

Material:

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, in proportions which can be varied to achieve varying

mechanical and electrical properties.

Brass has long been a popular material for decoration

for its bright gold-like appearance, e.g. for drawer
pulls and doorknobs. It has also been widely used for all
sorts of utensils due to many properties, such as low
melting point, workability (both with hand tools and
with modern turning and milling machines),
durability, electrical and thermal conductivity. It is still
commonly used in applications where low friction and
corrosion resistance is required, such
as locks, hinges, gears, bearings, ammunition casings, zip
pers, plumbing, hose couplings, valves, and electrical
plugs and sockets. It is used extensively for musical
instruments such as horns and bells, and also used as
substitute of copper in making costume
jewellery, fashion jewellery and other imitation
jewellery. The composition of brass, generally 66 percent copper and 34 percent zinc, makes
it favourable substitute for copper based jewellery as it exhibits greater resistance to
corrosion. Brass is often used in situations in which it is important that sparks not be struck,
such as in fittings and tools used near flammable or explosive materials [ CITATION wik20 \l
16393 ]

Unique Properties of Brass

The proportions of zinc and copper within Brass can be varied, creating a range of Brasses
with varying properties. Due to the variation in the alloy, Brass properties are not universal.
But, these alloys are known for being easily formed (i.e. machinability) and retaining high
strength after forming. All Brasses are known to be ductile - variations with lower zinc
content are more ductile and variations with higher zinc content being less so.

Similar to Copper, Brass is a poor breeding ground for bacteria. This quality makes it an ideal
material for bathroom fixtures and doorknobs, as well as medical applications.
Common Uses for Brass

Brass is most widely used in applications that are decorative and mechanical. Due to its
unique properties, which include corrosion resistance, common uses for Brass include
applications which require low friction. These applications can include fittings (fasteners and
connectors), tools, appliance parts, and ammunition components.

Decorative Applications

Beyond its antimicrobial properties, Brass's aesthetic value makes it a popular choice for
decorative applications. Its colouring can range from light gold and silver all the way to
almost red.

Residential dishwasher fittings and lamp fittings are commonly made of Brass, as they are
both visually appealing and bacteria resistant.

Mechanical Applications

From shell casings for an M-16 assault rifle to everyday use bearings and gears, Brass is
widely used for mechanical applications. Tools made of Brass are known to have extended
life and a reduced need for sharpening. [ CITATION Dan17 \l 16393 ]
