Zarzuela are melodramatic operettas
based on late 19th century Spanish models.
It replaced the moro-moro in popularity
during the last decades of Spanish Regime.

Tanikalang Ginto (1903)

 In our Country, the Zarzuela was supported financially by Imleda Marcos.
In addition, Zarzuela Ilocana has been staged in the Ilocano Dialect.

Until Today, Zarzuela is played especially in the Region of Ilocos

From 1950 onwards, Zarzuela prospered in a series of LP recordings from

EMI, was produced by the Alhambra Company in Madrid. It bacame popular
especially in Spain.

Locally, zarzuelas are perfromed ocassionally by prominent theater group

in CCP, Merlco Theater and UP Theater.
