Merit Scholarships Application Form


Application Due Date: JUNE 1, 2019

The Colburn School is proud to offer a limited number of merit scholarship awards for pre-college aged students
currently enrolled in the Community School of Performing Arts. The selection process for these awards are highly
competitive. Merit scholarship awards are valid for study during the fall and spring semesters only, and must be
re-applied for each year.

Honors Merit Scholarship


Awards granted will be up to 75% of 60 minute lessons. Upon receiving the award, student is required to enroll in
applied lessons, chamber ensemble, and music theory at Colburn. It is expected for the family to pay the full amount of
chamber ensemble and music theory tuition and at least 25% of applied lesson tuition. Further discounts may be applied
if the student is enrolled in Elementary Theory II or above, or receives an Honors Chamber Ensemble Scholarship. These
scholarships are determined annually by student performances, auditions, and a review of each student’s progress
throughout the course of the year.
Application Requirements
 A recommendation for previous or upcoming Honors Recital.
 An ability to represent the Colburn School in public performances or competitions.
 Recommendation letters from current individual lesson instructor AND an additional instructor at Colburn.
 Written personal statement as to why student should be considered for an award in their own words.
 Participation in the Honor’s Chamber auditions for piano, strings, woodwinds and brass, which will take place in
end of May/June. Students are responsible for scheduling an audition time with the CSPA office. Voice students
are exempt.

Honors Chamber Ensemble Scholarship


Awards are granted as 100% of chamber ensemble tuition. Student will be placed in a group based on their audition and
any previous performance in the chamber program. Students are required to rehearse with their groups two hours
weekly, participate in at least one competition (locally or nationally), and attend master classes and additional coachings
as deemed necessary. Students are highly encouraged to participate in the Chamber Music Intensive during summer.
Application Requirements
 Students must audition in end of May/June for acceptance and placement into the Honors Chamber Ensembles
for the upcoming school year. Pre-formed groups may audition as a whole to be considered together. Students
are responsible for scheduling an audition time with the CSPA office.
 Recommendation letters from current individual lesson instructor AND current/former chamber music coach.

Individual Lesson Scholarship


Student must be currently enrolled with an applied instructor at Colburn. Students must have received a
recommendation for a previous or upcoming Honors Recital. Students who have not fulfilled this requirement may
submit two letters of recommendations, a personal statement, and audition at the Honors Chamber Ensemble audition
in end of May/June for consideration in lieu of an Honors Recital. Awards are granted as dollar amounts ranging from
$100-300 per semester, which may only be used toward individual lessons.

Completed applications and required materials must be submitted to the CSPA office no later than Sat, June 1, 2019.
Applications may be emailed, faxed, or submitted in-person at the CSPA office. Notification of all scholarship awards is in
