Case study – Assessment of LNG as fuel demand for regional
market of Baltic Sea based on AIS Market Intelligence
SITUATION AND CRITICAL ISSUES

Forecasting LNG demand for a port

authority
The regional development agency of a Baltic port
launches an initiative to identify mid-term LNG demand
for 2020 and 2025.
Client wants to identify the need to provide adequate
bunker facilities for LNG and to be able to meet the
requirements of the shipping and tourism industries.

DNV GL SOLUTION VALUE DELIVERED

 Analytics using DNV GL’s unique database to  Access to unique data and information previously
generate maritime insights – based on global not existing
and regional AIS data linked to other databases  Discussion of methodology and findings generated
including geographical shapes (e.g. ports, ECA with client to align assumptions for the different
zones) and vessel particulars (e.g. ship types, scenarios
propulsion, age, owner- and operatorship)
 Important planning criteria gained for future
 Outside-in perspective on regional vessel development of port infrastructure
operations covering port sequences, time and
fuel consumption shares in ECA zones, etc.  Planning reliability to take next steps
 Development of three scenarios to forecast LNG
as fuel demand based on transport growth,
increasing efficiency, market penetration of LNG
and regional situation

Case study – Tendering for green ferry

SITUATION AND CRITICAL ISSUES
Sustainable ferry operations
Client wanted to tender for energy- and
environmentally efficient ferry to achieve the goal
of 15-20 % more energy efficient ferry operations.
DNV GL thus assisted in the tendering process with
the additional option to do the verification once the
ferry would be in operation.

DNV GL SOLUTION VALUE DELIVERED

 Assisting customer in preparing tender  100 % electric ferry (only battery) to be set in
documentation package operation 01.01.2015
 Revision/ analysis of current situation and  Reductions:
context  kWh/PCUkm: 37 %
 Investigating possibilities according to ambitions  MJ/year: 60 %
 Developing robust selection criteria and  CO2/year: 89 %
evaluation model
 NOX/year: 100 %
 Marine technology review and tender evaluation
 SOX/year: 100 %
 Sensitivity analysis to assess financial outcomes
 Achievement of customer goals with good margin
 Development of economical sanction model to
handle deviations  Prospect of further cooperation on future ferry
tenders
 Out of scope assistance (additional revenue)

Case study – Green tax regime advisory - Norwegian NOx-fund

SITUATION AND CRITICAL ISSUES
Safeguarding investments
The Norwegian NOx fund needed a partner for the
quality assurance and support regarding the use of
emission reducing technology, and to verify that
reduction targets were met. As the fund’s primary
objective is to reduce NOx-emissions, enterprises pay
a fee to the fund per kg NOx, replacing the far higher
state tax. Contributors are then entitled to receive
financial support for NOx reducing measures.

DNV GL SOLUTION VALUE DELIVERED

 Systematic evaluation of each funding  Evaluation of 1200+ investment cases
application and recommendation on support corresponding to 7 billion NOK in spending –
worthiness and payment amount so far
 Verification of implemented measures and  600+ applied measures verified, reducing the
achieved emission reduction yearly NOx by 24 000+ tons (~15 % of the
 Studies and analyses for maintaining and national emissions)
developing the fund model and principles,  The industry meets its commitment to reduce
together with reporting to the authorities emissions , helping national compliance with the
 General support to the fund’s board and Gothenburg protocol
administration in a range of questions – DNV GL  A strong market was created for LNG, SCR and
