Characterizing Interlayer adhesion and Fracture of 3D printed materials
A Fracture mechanics based technique was proposed to characterize fracture resistance and
interlayer adhesion of Fused Deposition Modeled 3D printed materials. Experiments reveled that
processing parameters has huge impact on interlayer adhesion and it can be enhanced by
optimizing various parameters. Responsible for designing specimens, test set up and performing
testing and finite element simulation of 3D printed materials.
Degradation of anode materials for Lithium ion batteries
One of the major capacity fade mechanism in high energy density Li ion battery anode is high stress
induced mechanical failure. Understanding the failure mechanism is important to design innovative
and complex electrode architectures, also mechanical properties of anode materials evolve during
charging and discharging of battery and should be understood to accurately model batteries. Nano
scale thin film electrodes are prepared by DC/RF sputter deposition, e-beam. Micro scale
electrochemical interactions are measured by performed by a Potentiostat. Laser assisted multi
beam optical sensor used to measure stress and experiments were designed for characterizing
degradation of anode materials.
Time dependent behavior of battery polymers
PVdF polymer used in current Li ion batteries is being approximated as elastic material for finite
element modeling of composite li ion battery. Our experiments showed that it is a time dependent
visco-plastic material. I developed a user defined material subroutine using MATLAB and FORTRAN
for finite element software ABAQUS to model PVdF as visco-plastic material which is more realistic
rather than elastic material assumption.

Dynamic Characteristics of Smart FGM Structures
Developed finite element code in FORTRAN to measure dynamic characteristics of smart
functionally graded materials. FGM material properties varies gradually with corresponding change
in volume fraction of combining materials which makes it difficult to implement in commercially
available standard finite element software. The finite element code can be used along with standard
FE software to model complex FGM structures.
