ADAPTATIONS IN ANIMALS
SESSION -5 REVISION
HABITAT : WHERE ANIMALS LIVE
Animals can be classified based on where they live.
Aquatic animals
Terrestrial animals
Amphibians
Aerial animals
Aquatic animals __ animals that live in water.
❖ Most aquatic animals breathe through gills except whales and dolphins which breathe
through lungs.

❖ Different aquatic animals have different locomotor organs to help in movement.

Fish have fins, hydra have tentacles, starfish have tube feet, ducks have webbed feet.
Every year 1st July is celebrated as Van Mahotsav Day.
Thousands of treesTERRESTRIAL
are planted all over the country in parks and forests.
ANIMALS
▪ They have legs / limbs to move on land. Most of them have lungs to breathe air.
Many animals have well developed specific parts of the body adapted to survive in a
certain environment. Ex. webbed feet, sharp claws, whiskers, sharp teeth, large
beaks, wings, and hooves.
Amphibians
❖ Can live on land and in water.
❖ Movement – forelimbs and hind limbs
❖ Breathing – lungs, moist skin, gills

Aerial Animals
❖ Spend most of their time in air.
❖ Adaptations
▪ Light hollow bones , boat shaped bodies
▪ Body covered with different types of feathers
▪ Soft down feathers to keep them warm
▪ Flight feathers to help them fly
▪ Tail feathers to control the direction of flight.
RECAP – AERIAL ANIMALS WATCH THIS VIDEO
❖ Camouflage is the ability and the need to merge
with the surroundings as a means of adaptation for
protection among animals.
❖ Animals need to camouflage to protect themselves
and live long enough to reproduce.
CAMOUFLAGE Watch the video : Camouflage – Arctic fox
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7mxTEskjQg

Arctic foxes have brown coats of fur in summer but grow white fur at the approach
of winter. Their colour merges with that of their surroundings and makes them
difficult to detect, thus making them safe.
SUMMARY
❖ Animals that live in water are called aquatic animals.
❖ Animals that live on land are called terrestrial animals.
❖ Amphibians are adapted to live both in water and on land.
❖ Animals that can fly are called aerial animals.
❖ Camouflage is the ability and the need to merge with the surroundings as
a means of adaptation to protection among animals and live long enough
to reproduce.
