ADAPTATIONS IN PLANTS

SESSION - 3
Based on their habitat, plants are
broadly classified into

Aquatic plants Terrestrial plants

Terrestrial Plants
Plants that grow on land are called terrestrial
plants. The habitats of terrestrial plants can be
broadly classified in to the following types:

(1)Plains
(2)Hilly regions
(3)Windy regions
(4)Deserts
(5)Marshy regions
Plains Hilly regions

Windy Region Marshy Region Desert

Plants In Plains
Plains are large areas of flat land.
The trees growing in the plains have many
branches.
Adaptation
In places with hot weather and some rainfall,
plants shed their leaves during autumn. Such
plants are called deciduous plants.
Examples: peepal tree, banyan tree
Shedding leaves helps trees to conserve water and
energy.
As unfavorable weather approaches the leaves are
actively cut-off from the tree by specialized cells .
Adaptation
In places with hot weather and heavy rainfall, plants have
green leaves throughout the year. Such plants are called
evergreen plants.
Examples: coconut tree, eucalyptus tree
Plants in hilly regions
Most of the plants that grow in hilly regions are
tall trees. We can find different varieties of trees
at different altitudes.
Example, trees such as pine and fir are found
in regions where there is heavy snow fall
Adaptation
The leaves of trees in hilly regions are
thick, waxy, and needle-shaped. This helps
the trees to survive in the cold and snow.
Adaptation
The trees have sloping branches and look conical
in shape. This helps snow to slide off easily from
trees.
Adaptation
Coniferous trees produce cones instead of
flowers. These cones carry the seeds.
Examples: pine, fir, and spruce tree

ASSIGNMENT
1 .Give two examples of plants found in
the hills.
2. How do the following help these
plants to survive?
(i) The sloping shape of conifers
(ii) The leaves of trees in hilly regions
are thick, waxy, and needle-shaped.
3. Why do some trees lose their leaves in
autumn?
