Product: Bio-Plastic Bags from Cassava Starch

Plastics have often been regarded as

the symbol of waste and contamination in

the world for environmentalists but

plastics are also considered as the first

magical material that is ready for everyday

use.

Worldwide, there are about 100 million

tons of petroleum plastics produced per

I. Rationale
year and it usually ends up in landfills,

rivers, oceans and lakes. This presents

huge problem on how to dispose plastics

or how to recycle them.

The economic importance for this

material is in fact huge. One of the

negative qualities attributed to plastics is

that they are generally biodegradable.

Because of this, many techniques had

been developed to solve the problem with

non-biodegradable plastic bags which gave

the proponents the idea of producing bio-

plastics bags made from cassava starch.

1. To identify the range of bio plastics

currently on the market by demand or

supply analysis

2. To determine the technical feasibility

of the product through identifying the

II. Objectives production capacity and its effects on

the environment

3. To determine the management

feasibility of the project by identifying

the appropriate form of business with

compliance to legal requirements to

carry out the project.

4. To ascertain the financial sustainability

and viability of the product proposed.

5. To determine how the project will be

most advantageous to the environment.

There is an increasing demand for
plastics in different aspects of our economy

such as in markets, pharmaceuticals and

even in households. This high demand for

plastics has been a major contributor to

garbage problems since they decompose

III. Project Description
slowly. The proponents decided to

manufacture bio plastic bags from cassava

starch that will serve as the new plastic bag

for consumers. It is an eco-friendly plastic

bag since it will be the alternative for other

plastics and its edge is that it decomposes

easily which does not harm our

environment and lessen garbage problems.

TRENDS
Bio-plastics constitute an emerging

and innovative industrial segment,

characterized by new collaborations among

the chemical, biotechnological, agricultural

IV. Current Market Trends and consumer sectors. Nowadays, a bio-

plastic alternative exists for almost every

conventional plastic material since it does

the same things as plastic does and saves

the environment. The trend on the present

is that people are being eco-friendly and

support using green products. The

proponent based on this trend and made an

improvement and innovation for

consumers to use and for the reduction of

pollution.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
The greatest competition that the

product would face is the paper bags that

are usually used by consumers. Since

plastics are already banned in the city,

paper bags were used as alternative

however it is not durable enough to carry

heavy loads. Bio-plastic bags’ advantage

would be its durability and convenience for

customers.

PROSPECT
The manufacturing of bio-plastic bags

is introduced by the proponents targeting

the people of Batangas City. Since plastic

was already banned within the vicinity,

some consumers still find it hard to use

paper bags since it breaks easily. The bio-

plastics will be sold and distributed to the

market for consumers to use and have a

comfortable and convenient shopping

without any worries about the carriage and

environment.
