conditions includes the investigation of the environment and the laws and regulations that may
restrict the construction. The environmental research is especially most important and may
affect the construction.
(2) In planning investigation, the purpose and scale of tunnel shall be considered. Each
investigation shall be examined according to its stage of investigation, objectives and necessary
precision. The sequence, area, duration of investigation shall also be examined upon
determination of details.
For special ground conditions in Table 2.1.1 and points of notice in design and construction
conditions in Table 2.1.2, investigation shall be fully carried out.
Research for tunnel construction is carried out at various stages from early stage of planning
to after the completion of construction. The objectives and precision may change during the
progress of construction. In this Specification, these stages of investigation are classified into
three categories; 1) investigation for deciding the route, 2) investigation for design and
construction planning, 3) investigation during the construction project. Occasionally, there is a
forth category; 4) investigation in the stage of maintenance and management (see 3.1.1 of Part
2).
