Below are the characters from the story “The Lottery” written by Shirley Jackson:

1 Mrs. Tessie Hutchinson The one that has bad luck. All things that is said to
happen will about to happen although we cannot predict if who is
going to be the victim and involve. At first, who would have
thought that Mrs. Hutchinson will be the victim of the lottery
game since she’s the character there who highlighted the word
“late”, and unconsciously forgot about the day. A latecomer
which implies tardiness who does not meeting up with proper or
usual timing. Otherwise, Mrs. Hutchinson is initially a playful
and friendly woman trying to switch the mood of the crowd by
defending herself and convince others by her excuses. Hence,
Mrs. Tessie Hutchinson is actually defensive, clever and scold
wife.
In the mid of the story Mrs. Hutchinson impatiently
waiting for her turn and with his family to be called by Mr.
Summer. However, that time Mrs. Hutchinson becomes
frightened and angry, she’s being aggressive knowing that his
husband has the paper with the black mark on it and is stoned to
death. She protests about what happen, opposing Mr. Summer
leadership and wanted to start the game again. Unluckily, the
paper with the black mark have transfer to her and so, her choices
won’t win against fate. Mrs. Hutchinson became the unlucky
loser of the lottery. Thus, her character give emphasis to all the
player that playing such dirty tricks will never did succeeded
perhaps at the end of the day, you will face the consequences.

2 Mr. Bill Hutchinson The character of Mr. Bill Hutchinson appears calmly and
never did complain. A kind of man who can just go with the flow
and accept everything whatever it was or it is. Mr. Bill
Hutchinson is the husband of Mrs. Tessie Hutchinson, they were
the two person who got the paper with the black mark which
means death. Considering Mr. Bill as unlucky yet lucky because
it was him who got the paper first but the lottery starts again and
it changed his fate. Eventually, he accept his fate stoically before
it was transferred. The kind of character Mr. Bill Hutchinson has
is opposite to the personality of his wife, he defers to the
commands authority of other and diligently agreed.
Though the happenings in the lottery all seems wrong Mr.
Hutchinson never care about it, he just leave it all to happen and
at somehow, he is a coward. And despite of it he’s fully willing to
show everyone that his wife has drawn the marked paper during
the second time of lottery. And imagine Mr. Hutchinson tells her
wife to stop who’s just trying to protest against the lottery and
Mr. Summer. Therefore, the lack of feeling for his wife is
apparently expressed which look like means that Tessie’s life is
not valuable.

3 Mr. Summers A successful business man who lead the lottery with all
his plan. He is well minded and efficient to handle the lottery.
Also, he is an outgoing person with a cheerful personality that’s
why the lottery never seems to be a danger at the beginning. The
mood was set accordingly of how Mr. Summers behave and act
without any suspicious things. And he also takes time to joke with
the participant. In the whole story it seems that Mr. Summers is
playing safe even though how danger it is yet he is trying all his
best in order for the people to coordinate. Though Mr. Summers
has the authority in leading the lottery he’s also considering pity
among his neighbors.
It was shown in the story that the lottery is well organized
by Mr. Summer. During the lottery Mr. Summers demonstrated
how he played the lottery fairly because he give chances to the
situation of Hutchinson’s family. Also, he is a considerate person
wherein he used to know each Families problem and understand
those leaders who are incapable of attending the lottery. Mr.
Summer is a joyous man and fair leader.

Below are the characters from the story “The Cask of Amontillado” written by Edgar Allan Poe:

4 Montressor Montressor is actually the narrator, who intended to take

a revenge drives the whole story. This man has intriguing
personality, he’s paying attention to what other might say about
him, even the smallest issue he will feel insulted. The history of
his family which he adores truly and followed does what makes
him murderous. He has said that Fortunato insulted him and his
family which urge him to do bad works. Emotionally, he seeks
revenge not for those hurtful words but because of his pride
ultimately persuaded him. Definitely, Montressor is a wise and
coldhearted man. He is good at fooling others and made tricks on
them. Otherwise, Montressor is talented and he shows his talent
through deceiving and betraying Fortunato. He’s really a
coldhearted man never know how to appreciate friendship and the
person. At last, Montressor shows his skill by planning to sets up
successfully the final exit of Fortunato in the catacombs. And the
moment when Furtonato gradually lost his life, Montressor felt
satisfied and resentless.

5 Fortunato Fortunato is a man who is addicted to wine, mainly his

disadvantage. A man who knows how to trust and kind of frank,
maybe that time Montressor was being insulted because
Fortunato might have been straightforward to his words.
Fortunato is likely insane, who act as fool and typically deceived
in many turns. He undoubtedly making choices that make his fate
worst. However, Fortunato’s boastfulness and ego, thinking that
he is an expert when it comes to wine certainly, he doesn’t act
like it. Sometimes because of our ego, we can gamble everything
just to prove that we’re good at all terms. Therefore, Fortunato’s
greed and competitiveness bring him at his worse. But it seems to
the story that fortunate thinks that he and Montressor are friends,
an opposite to Montressor personality, he knows how to value
friendship. Wine represents their connection towards fake
friendship, the trap and the disadvantage of Fortunato.
