Unit 03 PA 01:

Analyze the problem situation(s) described below. Organize and record your work for each of the following tasks. Using precise
mathematical language, justify and explain each solution process.

1. The fourth grade class filled candy bags for the school’s Spring Carnival. Matt filled 6 candy bags. Terry filled 6 times as
many candy bags as Matt. Ann filled 17 fewer candy bags than Terry.
a. Create an array model, displayed as a perfect square, that represents the number of candy bags Terry filled.
b. Create a strip diagram and an equation to represent n, the number of bags Ann filled.
c. Use rounding to find a reasonable estimate for the number of candy bags that Matt, Terry, and Ann filled altogether.
d. Determine the actual number of candy bags that Matt, Terry, and Ann filled altogether.
2. Three students in Mr. Krause’s class bought some tokens for the carnival. Tara bought 14 tokens. Madi bought 10 times
Performance more tokens than Tara. Kevin purchased 100 times as many tokens as Tara.
Assessment a. Determine the number of tokens that Tara and Madi bought altogether.
b. Use place value and properties of operations to determine the number of tokens that Kevin purchased.
c. Prior to leaving for the carnival, it was announced that Kevin won a school-wide contest. His prize was more tokens
to the carnival. Kevin now has triple the number of tokens he originally purchased. Determine the total number of
tokens Kevin has now.
3. Dimitri had practiced his juggling act to perform at the carnival. During January, he practiced 25 minutes a day for two full
weeks. In February, he practiced a total of 250 minutes.
a. Use a strategy of your choice (e.g., area model, mental math, partial products, or properties of operations) to find
the total number of minutes Dimitri practiced for his performance. Explain how your strategy relates to the standard
algorithm.
