What are Real numbers?
3. Explain
20 minutes Real numbers are defined as the collection of all rational
numbers and irrational numbers, denoted by R. Therefore, a
real number is either rational or irrational.
The set of real numbers is: R = {…-3, -√2, -½, 0, 1, ⅘, 16,….}
Five Subsets of Real Numbers
1. Natural or Counting Numbers - used in counting, uses ellipses
to indicate that the pattern continues indefinitely.
- In natural or counting numbers are subsets of all positive
integers that we use to count starting with "1"and so on.
2. Whole Numbers, consisting of the set of natural or counting
numbers and zero.
The subset would look like this:
{0, 1, 2, 3, 4...}
3. Integers, the result of the union of the set of whole numbers
and the negative of counting numbers.
Example: -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4
4. Rational Numbers, can be expressed as a quotient of two
integers. The integer a is the numerator while the integer b,
which cannot be 0 is the denominator. This set includes fractions
and some decimal numbers.
Examples of rational numbers are
5.34, 6, 0.131313… , 9.

5. Irrational Numbers, cannot be expressed as a quotient of two
integers. Every irrational number may be represented by a decimal
that neither repeats nor terminates.
Examples of irrational numbers are
√2, 4.626578…, 𝑒 and π.
e symbol, it refers to a mathematical expression for the base of
the natural logarithm. This is represented by a non-repeating
number that never ends. The first few digits of Euler's number
are 2.71828.
𝜋 symbol is the Pi, It was devised by British mathematician
William Jones in 1706 to represent the ratio and was later
popularized by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler. The
first 10 digits of pi (π) are 3.1415926535

1. Define and describe each classification of the real number system.
2. Select six students to sit in chairs in the front of the room facing the
class.
3. Give each student a sign to wear: (in this order) Real, Rational,
Irrational, Integer, Whole, Natural.
4. The remaining students will draw numbers from a container. As each
student reads his/her number, the students in the front will stand if the
number meets the constraints of their classification
