ANIMATION

 Combination of alphabets, numbers and symbol to

form a sentence or words to express something.
 Text is the most basic element of multimedia.
 A good choice of words could help convey the
intended message to the users (keywords).
 Used in contents, menus, navigational buttons 6

5 Elements of Multimedia

Text
TEXT

➢ Can be developed using any text editor (Notepad, WordPad)

➢ However, to give special effects to text, graphics software is
needed. (MS Word)
➢ Can have different typeface, size, color and style, background
color to suit the professional requirement of the multimedia
software.

ANIMATION

 A digital representation of images of non-text

information such as drawing, chart, diagram, or
picture
 Purpose: to show more clear information, to
illustrate ideas, and to develop an attractive
application.

5 Elements of Multimedia
GRAPHIC
Types of Computer images: bitmap (or
Graphic

paint images) and vector (or just plain

drawing)

Real images that can be

Bitmap
captured from cameras or
images
scanners. (photos)

Draw on the computer and

Vector
only required a small amount
graphics
of memory. (logo, clipart)

5 Elements of Multimedia
GRAPHIC Bitmap graphics are made up of colored
pixels. Pixels are squares of varying colors

Graphic
that once put together give you an image.

11

5 Elements of Multimedia
GRAPHIC Vector graphics are not constructed with
pixels at all (although they are displayed on
Graphic

your computer screen as pixels). They are

actually made-up of mathematical
expressions and instructions that produce
lines, curves and filled shapes.

Audio

ANIMATION

 Produced by vibration, as perceived by the sense of

hearing.
 In multimedia, audio could come in the form of
human voice, instrumental notes, natural sound,
speech, sound effects, and music score.
 Purpose: to make a lively presentation

5 Elements of Multimedia
AUDIO ➢ Types of audio or sound: analog
and digital audio.

Audio
Digital Audio Analog Audio

• the digital sampling of the actual sound • the original sound signal.
used in multimedia. • we can record analog audio file.
• special audio editors like Audacity
can be use to convert analog audio
files into digital audio files.

 Consists of images displayed in motion.
 Purpose: to provide a powerful impact in a
multimedia program

17

5 Elements of Multimedia
VIDEO
➢ Why digital video?

Advantages Disadvantages
• video clips can be edited • digital video files are
easily large in size
Video

• video files can be saved • transferring video files

ANIMATION

 Process of creating an illusion of movement

 Created by the consecutive display of static

Animation
images
 Tells a story

19

5 Elements of Multimedia
ANIMATION

 a sequence of still images that change over time

to portray the illusion of motion and to tell a
Animation

story
 Animation strictly is a visual illusion
 Purpose: to further enhance / enrich the
experience of the user, to make static
presentations come alive 20

5 Elements of Multimedia
ANIMATION ➢ Types of digital animation:
➢ 2D (two-dimensional) and
➢ 3D (three-dimensional)
• In 2-D space, the visual changes that
bring an image alive occur on the flat
Cartesian x and y axes of the screen.
2D
• Ex: A blinking word, a color-cycling

Animation
(2 Dimension)
logo, or a button or tab that changes
state on mouse rollover

21

5 Elements of Multimedia
ANIMATION ➢ Types of digital animation:
➢ 2D (two-dimensional) and
➢ 3D (three-dimensional)
• In 3-D animation, software creates a
virtual realm in three dimensions, &
changes (motion) are calculated along
all three axes (x, y, and z), allowing an
Animation

3D image or object that itself is created

(3 Dimension) with a front, back, sides, top, and
bottom to move toward or away from
the viewer
• Ex: spinning, or flying across the
screen

Importance of Multimedia
“Tell me and I will forget; show me and I may remember; involve
me and I will understand”
-Chinese proverb

In fact, research shows that people remember only 20% of what

they see, 30% of what they hear. When they see and hear it, they
remember 50%, if we include some interaction; they will
remember 80% of it.

Importance of Multimedia
• Activates multi-sensory system creating rich
experiences
• Provides richer and broader range of
information
• Improves retention
• Better understanding
• Gives life to flat information
• Enhances user enjoyment

29

Interactive Multimedia
• When the user is given the option of controlling the
media elements.
– Hence, users of interactive multimedia applications
become active participants instead of the passive
recipients of information

Hyper Media
 A combination of hypertext, graphics, audio, video,
(linked elements) and interactivity culminating in a
complete, non-linear computer-based experience.

• Navigational buttons
• Menus
• User’s input

33

Modes of Multimedia Interactivity

1. Linear Interactivity

➢Not interactive
➢User have no control over the content that is

being showed to them.

➢User is a passive receiver of the multimedia

content most of the time.

34

Modes of Multimedia Interactivity

1. Linear Interactivity
➢ Content is usually arranged in sequence :
Example: a movie - although a movie is multimedia, it
is not interactive (the user has no control over the
sequence of events).

35

Modes of Multimedia Interactivity

2. Non-Linear Interactivity

➢Interactive
➢User can control the sequence and progress of

the multimedia content.

➢Two way communication.

➢Users are given navigational controls like buttons

or links(active user).

36

18

Modes of Multimedia Interactivity

2. Non-Linear Interactivity
➢ Content is usually has links:
Example: Internet - uses tools like hypermedia to connect
text, graphic, audio, or video to other parts/screen.
