Tensile test of polymers

Note: For each experiment name the file by your name and the experiment name
as follows; “Abdallah.A-TensileTest”. Then, submit through the e-learning system.

• Describe the experiment procedures by your own words:

1. Check the specimen for any visible defects
2. Take measurements of the specimen
3. Secure the specimen to the machine using a proper clamp according
to the sample material and assure no slipping will happen
4. Insert dimensions and specimen material into the computer
5. Initiate the machine and observe the nature of deformation
6. Observe the results and take dimensions
7. Conclude the nature of deformation and if the sample is brittle or
ductile

• Write your own summary and conclusion:

Tensile testing is an easy method yet vital for understanding the nature of a
material and to have a sense of how much it can extend and how it will
react upon applying tensile force on it. As we observed the natural rubber
for example had a wide elastic range and upon breakage it showed little
extension and necking wasn’t really clear however the necking phenomena
was very clear in the HDPE specimen, glass filled nylon was very brittle and
showed almost no elastic deformation and finally in the general purpose
polystyrene cracks was observed along the whole specimen with almost no
elastic deformation. Safely securing the specimen to the machine is very
important for the safety as a slippage my cause a piece to fly and cause
damage.
