Chapter 2: Air Conditioning Systems

Department of Mechanical and Maintenance Engineering

German Jordanian University

1
Notes
HVAC Systems are categorized acceding to:
o the manner by which they distribute energy and ventilation air.
o How they are controlled.
o Their special equipment arrangements.

Dr Rafat Al-Waked, GJU 2

System Selection and Arrangement
HVAC central systems are located in one or more mechanical rooms
which is/are located outside the conditioned area:
o Noise.
o Spills.
o Maintenance.

Equipments normally found within the central mechanical room:

o Fans, air handlers, dampers and filters .
o Pumps and control valves.
o Heat exchangers.
o Flow measuring and control devices.
o Chillers and furnace or boiler equipment.

HVAC Zones
• Zone: a space requiring separate thermostatic control.
• Spaces with uniform loads : large, open areas with small
external loads. For example, auditoriums, stores and theatres.
• Spaces requiring precision control: areas that require strict
control of cleanliness, humidity, temperature, or air distribution.
For example, clean rooms, computer rooms, hospital operating
arenas.
• Multiple systems for large areas: several zones serviced by one
or more systems. For example offices, factories.
• Very large installations: many buildings served by a central
plant. For example, college campuses, research facilities,
industrial parks.

All-Air Systems
All heating and cooling (sensible and latent) is done by supplying air
to the conditioned space.
• Single-air System
• Reheat System
• Variable-volume System
• Dual-duct System
• Multi-zone System
• Low Temperature System

Air-Water Systems
Conditioned air and water are supplied to a terminal unit at a zone.
• Air-Water Induction System.
• Fan-Coil Conditioner System.

All-Water Systems
Air is heated and cooled at a terminal unit within the zone. Water is
conditioned by a central plant and pumped to the zone terminal
unit.
