THE LEGAL SAHARA

The luminaries of the future, come from within the great domains of eminent universities.
Universities which function as the centres for excellence, promoting the growth of future
generations to take over the functioning of a country, a role which is specifically important
and increasingly demanded in the society today. This fact, pertains to the National Law
Schools as well, present throughout the length and breadth of the country. As the bedrock of
one of societies most prominent and requisite functionaries, the educational requirements and
fulfilments are necessary for the success of the lawyers of tomorrow. In this regard it is
painful to witness the recent trends of protests of the students, which stem from the
apathetical approach of the administrative bodies of the National Law Universities in
providing to each and every individual who are students of these institutes, the requisites of a
basic standard of life, including access to safe drinking water, sleeping facilities (boarding),
and proper infrastructure among the plethora of problems that exist. Apart from this, these
National Universities, are plagued with administrative problems, and lack of proper
accountability, and facilities for imparting excellent academic education.

Students from the Himachal Pradesh National Law University, recently started a Protest,
seeking the basic necessities that any student in an institution has been by the legal mandate,
been required to receive. In their demands, they ask for basic living needs, including drinking
water, adequate infrastructure in both the living areas as well as their academic facilities,
proper sanitation, access to safe and hygienic food, access to academic resources amongst
many other pertinent issues. In times of great administrative uncertainty and complete
inordinate negative actions that the administration has undertaken, it is wondrous how the
entire student body, has maintained a peaceful and calm protest for their demands to the
rights which each of them are fundamentally entitled to.

In light of the dire situation of the university, the students maintaining their peaceful vigil and
demand through their protests, have ample necessity and urgency to do so. This lack of
institutional accountability and issues plaguing the University is also present in various other
National Law Universities. To enhance the legal education system, to one of global repute
and significance, there needs to be change, achieved from within the system, from the voices
of the students, as well as by necessary and immediate action from the responsible
authorities. The students of the Himachal Pradesh National Law University, in light of their
pursuits, are entitled to the basic demands that they seek from the administration. In such
times, it is necessary for all the stakeholders to show their solidarity with their counterparts.

The entire Legal Sahara Team are thus in complete solidarity to the protesting students of
Himanchal Pradesh National Law University, in their justified struggle for the
administration’s acceptance of their basic rights and facilities to enable them a justified and
proper educative framework.
