STEPS FOR VOLTAGE DIVISION

Step 1: Write down the ratio of capacitance i.e C1:C2

𝐶1 𝐶2
Step 2: Voltage across the capacitors: 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒1 = 𝑉 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒2 = 𝑉
𝐶1+𝐶2 𝐶1+𝐶2

Step 3 =>Cases:
Case 1: If C1 > C2 then; VC1<VC2
Therefore: VC1= 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒2 and VC2= 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒1
Case2: If C1 < C2 then; VC1>VC2
Therefore: VC1= 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒1 and VC2= 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒2
Case3: If C1 = C2 then; VC1=VC2
Therefore: VC1= 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒1=VC2= 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒2
Example 1: C1= 20F and C2=10F and V=50V
Step 1: C1:C2= 20:10
10
Step 2: Voltage across the capacitors: 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒1 = 50 = 16.66𝑉
10+20

20
𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒2 = 50 = 33.33𝑉
10+20

Case 1: C1 > C2 i.e 20F>10F then; VC1<VC2

Therefore: VC1= 16.66𝑉 and VC2=33.33𝑉

Example 2: C1= 20F and C2=30F and V=50V

Step 1: C1:C2= 20:30
20
Step 2: Voltage across the capacitors: 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒1 = 20+30 50 = 20𝑉

30
𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒2 = 20+30 50 = 30𝑉
Case 2: C1 < C2 i.e 20F>10F then; VC1>VC2
Therefore: VC1= 30𝑉 and VC2=20𝑉

Example 3: C1= 25F and C2=25F and V=50V

Step 1: C1:C2= 25:35 or 1:1
25
Step 2: 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒1 = 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒2 = 50 = 25𝑉
25+25
Case 3: VC1=VC2=25V
