Main Principle of Grillage Analysis

- The slab to be analyzed is divides into orthogonal grillage of beams in the longitudinal and
transverse directions.
- The analysis is based on Biharmoenic mathematical model for thin plate where

∆⁴ = δ⁴w/δx + 2δw/δx²y² + δ⁴w/δy⁴ = ρ(x)/D

- The plate is assumed to be isotropic and behave in a linear elastic manner.

- Deformation of the plate is small relative to the plate dimension.
- The Aspect ratio is to be kept as close to unity and should not exceed 1.5
- Mesh should be orthogonal, coincide with main longitudinal members.
- The transverse grillage beams represent the rigidities of the slab.
- Torsion stiffness is 1/10 of bending stiffness, is usually ignore in design.
- All loads are transformed into point loads, and applied at the nodes.

Space or three dimensional frame analysis only use in situation where it is necessary to model
restraint to the deck that is produced by the substructure and by soil structure interaction.
