Q1 / Determine the range of values which the mass mo may have so that the 100 kg block
shown in the figure will neither start moving up the plane nor slip down the plane. The
coefficient of static friction for the contact surface is 0.30.

Answer

a) Maximum value of the mass before the block move up.

µs=0.3

∑Fy=0

-981 sin70+N=0

N= 921.83 N

F= µsN

F= 276.55 N

∑Fx= 0

T-F-981cos70= 0

T=612 N

T=m0g

612/9.81=m0

m0=62.38kg
b) Minimum value of the mass before the block slip down.

µs=0.3

∑Fy=0

N-981 sin70= 0

N=921.83 N

F=0.3(922)

F=276.55 N

∑Fx= 0

T+276.55-981cos70= 0

T=59.52 N

T=m0g

59.52/9.81=m0

m0=6kg

Therefore 6.0 ≤ m0 ≤ 62.4kg
