1 LOCAL ACCELERATION LOGIC

1.1 Application To achieve fast clearing of faults on the whole line, also in cases where no
communication channel is available, local acceleration logic is used. This
logic will enable fast clearing under certain conditions, but naturally, it
can not fully replace a communication channel.

The logic can be controlled either by the autorecloser or by the loss of

load current.

1.2 Theory of operation When the autorecloser controls the function, a signal “autorecloser
ready” (AR---READY) allows an overreaching zone (IMP--EXACC) to
trip instantaneously. When the autorecloser initiates the close order, there
will be no AR---READY signal, and the protection will trip normally with
step distance time functions. In case of a fault on the adjacent line within
the overreaching zone range, an unwanted autoreclosing cycle will occur.
The step distance function at the reclosing attempt will prevent an
unwanted retrip when the breaker is reclosed. On the other hand, at a per-
sistent line fault, only the first trip will be “instantaneous”.

When the “acceleration” is controlled by a loss of load, the overreaching

zone used for “acceleration” (IMP--LLACC) is not allowed to trip
“instantaneously” during normal non-fault system conditions. When all
three phase currents have been >10% of Ir for more than 35 ms, an over-
reaching zone will be allowed to trip “instantaneously” during a fault con-
dition when one or two of the phase currents will become low due to a
three-phase trip at the opposite terminal, see Fig. 1. The load current in a
healthy phase is in this way used to indicate the tripping at the opposite
terminal. Note that this function will not operate in case of three-phase
faults - none of the phase currents will be low when the opposite terminal
is tripped.

1.3 Setting The local acceleration functions is set in the menu under:
Setting
Functions
Group n
Impedance
Communication

To allow the “overreaching” trip controlled by the autorecloser at earth

fault only, the zone used for this function can be set with a normal reach of
85%, but with an increased X0 setting that gives an overreach for ground
faults. This requires an X0 setting for this zone = 1,35 ⋅ X0 + 0,35 ⋅ X1,
where X0 and X1 are the zero and positive sequence impedances respec-
tively for the line. This setting excludes the use of this zone for any pur-
pose other than local acceleration logic.

1.4 Testing The logic is checked during the secondary injection testing of the measur-
ing zones with a fault applied at 100%.

When the conditions for the acceleration are not fulfilled, the fault will be
tripped with the second zone time delay. When the conditions for the
accelerated function are fulfilled either by the autorecloser or by the loss
of load, the fault will be tripped “instantaneously”.

This test is performed with single line to earth fault only.
