ABSTRACT

This thesis is a qualitative study, tracing out the theme of class distinction in selected

short stories of Mansfield and Mueenuddin. Katherine Mansfield explored the theme of

class distinction in her short stories, depicting the bleak state of her English society. The

same social issue is taken up by Mueenuddin in his short stories, depicting the troubles

and social unrest caused by the class divisions in pakistani society. Both the writers show

the distinct life styles of upper social classes and the working classes. Class distinction is

a social evil. Lack of parity and unequal distribution of material resources compel the

members of lower classes to adopt unfair means to raise their social class.
