VOICE OF THE PEOPLE

The need for de-escalation techniques
On Tuesday June 9th, the city live-streamed a town hall
meeting that addressed policing in Columbus. Among other
topics, Police Chief Fred Shelton discussed the city’s policies
regarding when and how force should be used by his police
officers.
What wasn’t addressed, and I understand time was limited,
was whether the Columbus Police Department has any training
in place to teach its officers how to de-escalate conflicts, and
whether the Columbus Police Department has any policies in
place requiring de-escalation attempts before force or weapons
are used.
Many police-associated tragedies of the past decade (and be-
yond that, too) might have been avoided if the officers involved
had the know-how and tools to calm volatile situations. But this
is not a skill that comes naturally to most people, nor apparent-
ly to police in particular. Training and policies are needed.
Do we have de-escalation training and policies for local
police officers? If we do not, can we please work on adopting
them immediately!
