Rm 5:1-8
Matt. 9:35-10:8
Often, from time to time, it feels like the world has gone completely mad. Perhaps over this last week
it might seem like one of those times. As lockdown restrictions ease a little, many schools reopen, and
the economy hopefully begins to pick up, all positive signs of a new normal beginning to take place; at
the same time there have been events which have flared up, with recent riots and demonstrations, and
these have served to put many things into question. No doubt these demonstrations were originally intended to be
peaceful to make a powerful statement, however there will always be the few who will use opportunities such as this to
create mayhem, instil violence and sabotage any good intentions. Times may change, but goodness and evilness continue
to thrive. Or so it seems. Even though we know that ultimately, it is goodness that has been and will be victorious,
through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who has already emerged victorious from the bonds of death, and reigns now
in heaven, where he has the ultimate authority and power over all creation.
And so when we consider this Sunday’s readings, we are reading about a Jesus who made himself vulnerable, who was
faced with continuous evil and sin all around, yet who was filled with only goodness. Pure goodness. So in some re-
spects, it seems perfectly reasonable that Jesus went about all the cities and villages freely. But at the same time, it is ra-
ther odd. Being able to teach in the synagogues and proclaim the good news of the kingdom, without being harassed or
prevented or questioned. Well, apart from in his home town of Nazareth when they tried to throw him off a cliff. But
from this passage from Matthew’s Gospel, it sounds like these were the golden days of his earthly ministry. At least this
is what is appears like at face value, however the Pharisees were secretly watching him, building up a case against him,
watching out for the slightest thing that would add to their case against him. And Jesus is aware that all of this is accumu-
lating in the background, and continues with his mission regardless. He gathers his chosen twelve disciples and gives
them authority over unclean spirits, and to cure diseases and sickness. They are to seek out the lost sheep of the house
of Israel, and all for no payment. Give freely as you have been given.
And in our passage from Romans, Paul explains the link between faith, peace, grace, suffering, endurance, character, and
hope. Hope in sharing the glory of God. Our Archbishop officially retired at the beginning of this week. His ministry has
been one of deep faith, an ambassador of peace, demonstrating grace, having endured much suffering through his life,
showing a great strength of character which has been both joyful and wise, and always preaching about the kingdom of
God, about the love of Jesus, and about the hope that is in, with and through him. As a leader and example to us, a shep-
herd and keeper of the faith, let us seek to grow in and through these same gifts and challenges,
and in doing so, to continue to share the hope that is Jesus, be labourers of his harvest, and pro-
claim the good news of the kingdom.

Pastoral Care
Weddings Sadly, there can be no weddings in church buildings until further notice.
Funerals may now only happen at the Crematorium or at the graveside. Only immediate family members can attend (if the cremato-
rium allows) – that is, spouse or partner, parents and children, keeping their distance in the prescribed way.
Baptisms Emergency baptisms can take place in a hospital or at home, though subject to strict hygiene precautions and physical dis-
tancing as far as this is possible.
Pastoral Care List. Please contact Andy or Claire if you would like someone from our Church to stay in touch.
Andy received a note from Pauline Howard who wishes to express her thanks to everyone for the letters, cards and
prayers following the tragic bereavement within her family. The loss came as a huge shock of course. Pauline adds that
she hopes the lock-down will soon be over so that the church family can all be together again. Our sentiments exactly
Pauline!
Congratulations to Barbara and Derek Lythe who celebrate their 43rd Wedding Anniversary on 18th June. Another
St Agnes wedding.
Andy reports that Frances Iseton has been moved back to Redcar Hospital, lets keep her in our prayers, it must be
awful for her being shunted from pillar to post when she is not well. Barbara Lythe keeps in touch and has said that
Frances is feeling better and slowly improving, lets keep praying that her recovery continues.
Linda had a call from her sister last week, her Granddaughter Robin aged 3 (Linda’s Great Niece) has been helping her
Dad in the garden and learning about plants. Dad Chris has been growing tomatoes to Robin’s great interest. What a
surprise he got when Robin said “Daddy I have saved you a job today” and promptly showed him a pocket full of tiny
tomatoes which she had carefully picked that day. We can only guess at what went through Chris’s mind at that mo-
ment. Suffice to say no 3 year olds were harmed as a result of this story and Chris is slowly recovering!
I had an email from Margaret and Tony Sims saying how much they enjoy this newsletter, particularly the jokes, the
tea cosy joke from two weeks ago reminded them of an incident and I quote:
A few years ago when our eldest grandson was about 3 years old Tony and I took him to visit the Dorman Museum in town. As a
treat we took him into the vintage tea room in the museum. Whilst waiting for our order I noticed Josh staring at the table in front
and could hardly take his eyes off it. He then turned and asked "Granny why is the teapot wearing a hat"? Obviously never seen or
heard of a tea cosy.
Elaine Curry emailed to thank us for our prayers and support and said that she thought her recent Bishops Advisory
Panel (BAP) interview seemed to go well. Let’s keep her in our prayers as she waits to see if she is called to the priest-
hood.
When I see the disregard for social distancing at protests over last weekend I worry about a second pandemic, the cause
of the protests is just but so is the plight of NHS workers, the hungry, the homeless and many more who will be put at
further risk if Ro number becomes greater than one, at the moment we teeter on the edge after 12 weeks of hard slog.
Please God don’t let us throw it all away!
