This Sunday is Christ the King or has been called the judgement of “Kingdomtide”, dealing
with more judgements. As a feast day it is relatively young, starting as recently as 1925 by
the Catholic Church, so it does not have a long history but continues St Matthew’s Gospels
theme of judgement (or Hope), both for the individual and state.
It is also the last Sunday of the church year, and we might say good riddance to this year.
Then we start anew a week on Sunday with Advent, the hope of things to come, the light-
ing of the candles and the anticipation of Christmas. We all need Hope in these times.
I thought Sam did an excellent service last week and his sermon, taking the reading from St
Matthew of the rich man giving talents to the servants, has sometimes seemed difficult pas-
sage, but Sam put a new light on the parable in the light of history, and made it much easier to interpret.
If we continue on in St Matthews Gospel, this week we learn more on judgement, where injustice and oppression have
the upper hand. But again, like the talents if it is viewed in the context of when it was given can also be seen as a call for
Israel's leaders to protect the poor and downtrodden. A similar call can be given now – with a reminder of our reverse
Advent Calendar for the support of the Middlesbrough Food bank.
This Sunday is also known as “Stir up Sunday”, after the traditional Collect for this Sunday, and a reminder to prepare for
Christmas - “Stir up – we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people”
Hopefully the wills of the some of our faithful congregation will be stirring up their Christmas puddings and giving them
chance to mature during Advent.
Let us pray that we can all look forward to the coming of Advent with a new sense of hope for the future. The old year
is almost behind us and we can look forward to the new one with a confident expectation of an improvement in our situ-
ation. That a vaccine becomes available to enable us to live our lives in a more normal manor, that isolation no longer is
the norm, people can go back to work in the hospitality and beauty sectors and the Church community can at last get
together to worship in our Church.
On the note of hope, let us continue to pray that we can find a new Vicar, that someone will be guided to come forward
and lead us into the future, especially as Bishop Paul has suggested a date for interviews on the 13th January, which is not
far away.
And finally in these difficult times can we all pray for Christian Love within our community.
The times are hard and pressures are great. The traditional St Cuthbert outlet for stress and trouble, refreshment and
intersession – or a cup of tea and a chat – are no longer available. Life is hard in a bubble and sometimes the bubble boils
over!
We all need to be able to reconnect when this epidemic is over and a reminder to give a loving Christian thought for one
another.

Scams
Many people have household items such as wash-
ing machines insured by Domestic and General
(D&G), Anne Pybus rang to say she had received a phone
call from a company called Domestic Appliances (easily
confused with the genuine D&G) offering a better deal
and asking for lots of personal information. Anne declined
to give details and phoned D&G. They said that they had
been receiving lots of calls regarding this company and in
it is a scam to get your details. Don’t be fooled! Never
give your details to an unsolicited caller or phone them
back on a number they may give you during the call as
what looks like a genuine UK number may be just a front. Middlesbrough Council Advice & Support

Alan would love to hear from you.
It just shows what can be achieved with decent equipment and the ability to use it! Sam’s service on Sunday was amazing
and uplifting. Clearly being able to pre record rather than live streaming improved the sound and visual experience . The
content though was entirely down to Sam. I enjoyed it immensely and judging by comments left on our Facebook page
many others did too. We look forward to this weeks service from St Mary’s Nunthorpe which is also pre recorded.
There is good news to report this week! We expect to be holding interviews for the post of Vicar of Marton mid Janu-
ary 2021! IF we get a successful candidate it will take a few months to get them in post but we have started the process
towards an appointment.
On Friday whilst busy in the house we had Smooth Radio playing in the background, the phone rang and it was Molly
Swash, always a pleasure to hear from her, she said “do you know Roy’s a grandad”? First thought was I know Pearl’s a
singer but never heard of that one! Then it dawned that she was referring to Roy Robertson whose daughter Jennifer
has given birth to healthy twin girls! Congratulations to the Robertson family who now have some joy to look forward
to.
Our PCC meeting on Tuesday 25th November at 7.00pm will be held on Zoom, I will send out meeting
invitations by email to PCC members nearer the time.
I had a call from Edna Harrison on Friday, she is much improved and out and about a little although Stan was back in hos-
pital when we spoke but hopefully on his way home soon. I am amazed that with all the things she has had to cope with
over recent weeks, not least Covid-19 which she believes she caught at the hospital, she still has time to think about St
Cuthbert’s and the foodbank and came out of her way to drop off generous contributions for both. Clearly our prayers
were answered in her case, lets keep praying for the Harrison family.
We decided at Standing Committee that we would collect the foodbank reverse advent boxes at our service on
Sunday 6th December but would have our toy service the week after on 13th December Covid permitting.
We thought it would be too much to do both on the same weekend.
On the next page there is information about this project which will brighten our streets if we can get plenty of people to
take part. It is being organised by Rev’d Laura Wild , Curate at St Mary’s Nunthorpe, please join up if you are able.
Anyone see the article on This Morning about advent calendars last week? All about expensive gifts, Barbie dolls and
accessories, Christianity stripped out completely ,

Advent Windows 2020
Volunteers with street-facing windows are sought to create a collaborative Advent Calendar in Marton and Nunthorpe,
bringing light and hope to our community, one day at a time…
Here is what is asked of you:
Participants create a (visible from the road) lit window display, on a Christmas Carol theme.
Each window is assigned a day between December 1st and 24th to ‘open’ (first light up and be revealed), ideally not later
than 5pm on your assigned day.
Once your window is open, please keep it lit each following evening (5pm-8pm minimum) until Sunday 5th January 2021.
Please add the number of your allocated day to the corner of the display.
What is involved:
A map/list of window addresses will be created and made available for download from https://stmarys-nunthorpe.org/
and www.memc.uk/nunthorpe
The evolving calendar will be publicised by social media including the local Churches’ Facebook pages.
Individuals and families will be encouraged to follow the route in their own timing and keeping to their household/bubble.
To take part:
Please email rev.laura.wild@gmail.com by Wednesday 25th November with your full address and your top 3 prefer-
ences for window themes from the list below.
In anticipation of a joyful Advent in our homes and streets!
