OLD PALM BRANCHES
Last year’s palms or older, may be brought in to St.
Helen’s Church and left in a basket at the back of the
church. Fr. will collect these palms and burn them,
making the ashes needed for distribution on Ash
Wednesday. Anyone who would prefer to dispose of
their own old palms are asked to burn or bury them, do
not put them out with the household garbage. This is
done as a matter of respect toward the palms that may
be withered now, but were once used to recall Christ’s
entry into Jerusalem.
COUNTDOWN FOR LENT (MARCH 2ND)
Lent is a time for penance and repentance, for
almsgiving and prayer, for working to change attitudes
that are no pleasing to God.
 SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
This week the Gospel
offers us an important
message that is specifically
for Christians: the love of
one’s enemies. Jesus asks
us not only to tolerate our
enemies and to be patient
with them, but also to love
them. This is something impressionable and certainly
difficult.
It’s natural to respond to opposition of an enemy in
one particular manner. When one is submitted to
violence, it is normal to respond with a similar violence,
a desire for vengeance.
Jesus says the opposite: Love your enemies, do good
to those you abhor. He doesn’t only ask to have a
favourable regard for them but to withdraw violent
consequences by concrete acts of love. To act in their
favour, to let them have a loving encounter. This is
even harder yet.
The Old Testament has already begun this in a less
clear, less explicit manner.
The second reading does not consider the same theme
as the first reading as the gospel, but it does speak of a
profound change if we are to follow Christ.
WHAT IS ALPHA?
Alpha is an opportunity to explore
life and the Christian faith in a friendly,
open and informal environment.
St. Helen's parishioners will be hosting our first Alpha
starting on February 25th. We will meet weekly on a
zoom call from 7:00-8:30 pm.
Alpha is for anyone; members of our parish, in the
wider community, those with great faith and those
starting to ask the big questions so we welcome
everyone and anyone interested.

NOTICE OF DEATH
Please keep in your prayers the repose
of the soul of Most Reverend John
Aloysius O’Mara, Bishop Emeritus of
St. Catharines. Bishop O’Mara passed
away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday February 16,
2022. He was 97 years old. We extend our condolences
to the family and friends who mourn his loss.
