 Analysis of geometrical parameter:

 Unexpanded Profile: outer diameter, gap width, and
radii.
 Expanded profile: outer diameter, wall thickness and
crack control.

 Analysis of mechanical parameter:

 Cross section and weight.
 Weld integrity.
 Expansion test in free air.
 Expansion test in borehole dummy.
 Ultimate tensile load.
 Yield load.
 Elongation.

 Each test is performed per the ASTM A370-10

Section A.2.2.1
 Full Section test is preformed after the final
product has been fully worked in order to account
for strain hardening in the material.

 Epiroc will not use A.2.2.2 as this is a strip test

of the parent material before being cold worked
and strain hardened, which greatly reduces the
ductility of the material.
 Does not represent final product performance,
falsely shows higher elongation capacity

Swellex manufacturing – why we select steel with better ductility
 Ductility is one key parameter for your productivity and safety;
 Ductility has to be measured against strict standard and in full section on finished product, preferable re-expanded to include impact of installation of
product.
 For productivity: Swellex profile starts with flat steel, rolled into a round tube and folded on itself into a “C” shape to finally be unfolded
during installation. Lots of cold work that will turn into failure during installation and reduced total productivity if not selecting the proper
steel.
 For Safety: The ductility directly impacts the energy required to bring the bolt to failure.

• 6% is too low ductility to

ensure reliability
• 10% is required to ensure
reliability for productivity
and minimum energy
absorbency for safety
• 20% is best for safety if
risk of energy release from
the rock mass due to depth
or geology.
