ASSIGNMENT 1 - 4AEM1
1. Why do pilots prefer to fly at 36,000 feet?
 Higher altitude is better because the air is thinner, and aircraft could move
faster and burns less fuel therefore save cost.
 Could avoid traffic because light aircraft and helicopter fly at lower altitude.
Light aircraft do not have pressurized cabin, so it flies below 10,000 ft.
Helicopter, it can’t fly at high altitude because of the air density. The lift that
is produced is proportional to the density of air; the higher the density, the
more lift is produced and the more comfortably the helicopter can fly. For
example, helicopter can’t fly to the peak of Mount Everest as it stands at a
staggering 8,848 meters above sea.
 Can avoid bad weather as commercial jet aircraft fly in the
lower stratosphere to avoid the turbulence which is common in
the troposphere below. The stratosphere is very dry; air there contains little
water vapor. Because of this, few clouds are found in this layer; almost all
clouds occur in the lower, more humid troposphere. More,
commercial aircraft fly within both the Troposphere, especially when
departing or landing and the next highest layer, the Stratosphere, for most of
their flights.
 In the event of emergency such as engine fails. The pilot has longer to deal
with the situation to perform such manoeuvre to save lives.
