Chapter 4 Reaction - The Ambivalence of Filipino Traits and Values
Vision: A premier Science & Technology University for the formation of a world
Class and virtuous human resource for sustainable development in Bohol and the
country.
Values are integral part of every culture. Over time, they become the roots of traditions that
group of people find important in their day-to-day lives. Filipino values may be attributed into many
influences. These can be from ancestors or influenced by colonizers as well as neighboring
nationalities.
The Filipino value system arises from our culture or way of life, our distinctive way of becoming
human in this particular place and time. It is given that none of us is perfect except God. We all have
our good and bad sides. Speaking of our values, there are also pros and cons. The truth is that Filipino
values are ambivalent in the sense that we have the potential for good or evil, a help or hindrance to
personal and national development, depending on how they are understood, practiced or lived. They
can be used in a good or evil context, e.g, pakikisama sa kabuktutan or sa kaunlaran.
When we speak of Filipino values, we do not mean that elements of these Filipino values are
absent in the value system of other people and cultures. All people eat, talk, sing and dance but they
eat different foods, speak various languages, sing different songs and dance with different musics.
Thus, we easily recognize Filipino, American, Chinese, Japanese or any other foreign food, language
or music.
Much has been said about so-called negative Filipino traits. They have been blamed for the
weak character of the Filipino. That is why in my opinion, we should get rid some of it like being balat-
sibuyas, mańana habit, colonial mentality, crab mentality, bahala na attitude, corruption, ningas-kugon,
and Filipino-time. These Filipino traits and values can hinder our success and may put us in trouble so
as much as possible, we should avoid doing them.
On the other hand, there are also traits and values of Filipinos that in my opinion should be
retained just like the bayanihan, hospitality, close family relations, damayan, religious, compassionate,
matiyaga, respect to elders, utang-na-loob, and remedy attitude.
