Atahah Saptamo Adhyayah

# Verse Translation
BG 7.1 śrī-bhagavān uvāca The Supreme Personality of Godhead said:
mayy āsakta-manāḥ pārtha Now hear, O son of Pṛthā, how by practicing
yogaḿ yuñjan mad-āśrayaḥ yoga in full consciousness of Me, with mind
asaḿśayaḿ samagraḿ māḿ attached to Me, you can know Me in full, free
yathā jñāsyasi tac chṛṇu from doubt.
BG 7.2 jñānaḿ te 'haḿ sa-vijñānam I shall now declare unto you in full this
idaḿ vakṣyāmy aśeṣataḥ knowledge, both phenomenal and numinous.
yaj jñātvā neha bhūyo 'nyaj This being known, nothing further shall remain
jñātavyam avaśiṣyate for you to know.
BG 7.3 manuṣyāṇāḿ sahasreṣu Out of many thousands among men, one may
kaścid yatati siddhaye endeavor for perfection, and of those who
yatatām api siddhānāḿ have achieved perfection, hardly one knows
kaścin māḿ vetti tattvataḥ Me in truth
BG 7.4 bhūmir āpo 'nalo vāyuḥ Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence
khaḿ mano buddhir eva ca and false ego — all together these eight
ahańkāra itīyaḿ me constitute My separated material energies.
bhinnā prakṛtir aṣṭadhā
BG 7.5 apareyam itas tv anyāḿ Besides these, O mighty-armed Arjuna, there
prakṛtiḿ viddhi me parām is another, superior energy of Mine, which
jīva-bhūtāḿ mahā-bāho comprises the living entities who are
yayedaḿ dhāryate jagat exploiting the resources of this material,
inferior nature.
BG 7.6 etad-yonīni bhūtāni All created beings have their source in these
sarvāṇīty upadhāraya two natures. Of all that is material and all that
ahaḿ kṛtsnasya jagataḥ is spiritual in this world, know for certain that I
prabhavaḥ pralayas tathā am both the origin and the dissolution.
BG 7.7 mattaḥ parataraḿ nānyat O conqueror of wealth, there is no truth
kiñcid asti dhanañjaya superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me, as
mayi sarvam idaḿ protaḿ pearls are strung on a thread.
sūtre maṇi-gaṇā iva
BG 7.8 raso 'ham apsu kaunteya O son of Kuntī, I am the taste of water, the
prabhāsmi śaśi-sūryayoḥ light of the sun and the moon, the syllable oḿ
praṇavaḥ sarva-vedeṣu in the Vedic mantras; I am the sound in ether
śabdaḥ khe pauruṣaḿ nṛṣu and ability in man.
BG 7.9 puṇyo gandhaḥ pṛthivyāḿ ca I am the original fragrance of the earth, and I
tejaś cāsmi vibhāvasau am the heat in fire. I am the life of all that
jīvanaḿ sarva-bhūteṣu lives, and I am the penances of all ascetics.
tapaś cāsmi tapasviṣu
BG 7.10 bījaḿ māḿ sarva-bhūtānāḿ O son of Pṛthā, know that I am the original
viddhi pārtha sanātanam seed of all existences, the intelligence of the
buddhir buddhimatām asmi intelligent, and the prowess of all powerful
tejas tejasvinām aham men.
BG 7.11 balaḿ balavatāḿ cāhaḿ I am the strength of the strong, devoid of
kāma-rāga-vivarjitam passion and desire. I am sex life which is not
dharmāviruddho bhūteṣu contrary to religious principles, O lord of the
kāmo 'smi bharatarṣabha Bhāratas [Arjuna].
BG 7.12 ye caiva sāttvikā bhāvā Know that all states of being — be they of

rājasās tāmasāś ca ye goodness, passion or ignorance — are
matta eveti tān viddhi manifested by My energy. I am, in one sense,
na tv ahaḿ teṣu te mayi everything, but I am independent. I am not
under the modes of material nature, for they,
on the contrary, are within Me.
BG 7.13 tribhir guṇa-mayair bhāvair Deluded by the three modes [goodness,
ebhiḥ sarvam idaḿ jagat passion and ignorance], the whole world does
mohitaḿ nābhijānāti not know Me, who am above the modes and
mām ebhyaḥ param avyayam inexhaustible.

BG 7.14 daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the
mama māyā duratyayā three modes of material nature, is difficult to
mām eva ye prapadyante overcome. But those who have surrendered
māyām etāḿ taranti te unto Me can easily cross beyond it.

BG 7.15 na māḿ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ Those miscreants who are grossly foolish, who
prapadyante narādhamāḥ are lowest among mankind, whose knowledge
māyayāpahṛta-jñānā is stolen by illusion, and who partake of the
āsuraḿ bhāvam āśritāḥ atheistic nature of demons do not surrender
unto Me.

BG 7.16 catur-vidhā bhajante māḿ O best among the Bhāratas, four kinds of
janāḥ sukṛtino 'rjuna pious men begin to render devotional service
ārto jijñāsur arthārthī unto Me — the distressed, the desirer of
jñānī ca bharatarṣabha wealth, the inquisitive, and he who is
searching for knowledge of the Absolute
BG 7.17 teṣāḿ jñānī nitya-yukta Of these, the one who is in full knowledge and
eka-bhaktir viśiṣyate who is always engaged in pure devotional
priyo hi jñānino 'tyartham service is the best. For I am very dear to him,
ahaḿ sa ca mama priyaḥ and he is dear to Me.
BG 7.18 udārāḥ sarva evaite All these devotees are undoubtedly
jñānī tv ātmaiva me matam magnanimous souls, but he who is situated in
āsthitaḥ sa hi yuktātmā knowledge of Me I consider to be just like My
mām evānuttamāḿ gatim own self. Being engaged in My transcendental
service, he is sure to attain Me, the highest
and most perfect goal.
BG 7.19 bahūnāḿ janmanām ante After many births and deaths, he who is
jñānavān māḿ prapadyate actually in knowledge surrenders unto Me,
vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti knowing Me to be the cause of all causes and
sa mahātmā su-durlabhaḥ all that is. Such a great soul is very rare.

BG 7.20 kāmais tais tair hṛta-jñānāḥ Those whose intelligence has been stolen by
prapadyante 'nya-devatāḥ material desires surrender unto demigods and
taḿ taḿ niyamam āsthāya follow the particular rules and regulations of
prakṛtyā niyatāḥ svayā worship according to their own natures.
BG 7.21 yo yo yāḿ yāḿ tanuḿ bhaktaḥ I am in everyone's heart as the Supersoul. As
śraddhayārcitum icchati soon as one desires to worship some demigod,
tasya tasyācalāḿ śraddhāḿ I make his faith steady so that he can devote
tām eva vidadhāmy aham himself to that particular deity.
BG 7.22 sa tayā śraddhayā yuktas Endowed with such a faith, he endeavors to
tasyārādhanam īhate worship a particular demigod and obtains his
labhate ca tataḥ kāmān desires. But in actuality these benefits are
mayaiva vihitān hi tān bestowed by Me alone.

BG 7.23 antavat tu phalaḿ teṣāḿ Men of small intelligence worship the
tad bhavaty alpa-medhasām demigods, and their fruits are limited and
devān deva-yajo yānti temporary. Those who worship the demigods
mad-bhaktā yānti mām api go to the planets of the demigods, but My
devotees ultimately reach My supreme planet.

BG 7.24 avyaktaḿ vyaktim āpannaḿ Unintelligent men, who do not know Me

manyante mām abuddhayaḥ perfectly, think that I, the Supreme Personality
paraḿ bhāvam ajānanto of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, was impersonal before
mamāvyayam anuttamam and have now assumed this personality. Due
to their small knowledge, they do not know My
higher nature, which is imperishable and
supreme.
BG 7.25 nāhaḿ prakāśaḥ sarvasya I am never manifest to the foolish and
yoga-māyā-samāvṛtaḥ unintelligent. For them I am covered by My
mūḍho 'yaḿ nābhijānāti internal potency, and therefore they do not
loko mām ajam avyayam know that I am unborn and infallible.

BG 7.26 vedāhaḿ samatītāni O Arjuna, as the Supreme Personality of

vartamānāni cārjuna Godhead, I know everything that has
bhaviṣyāṇi ca bhūtāni happened in the past, all that is happening in
māḿ tu veda na kaścana the present, and all things that are yet to
come. I also know all living entities; but Me no
one knows.
BG 7.27 icchā-dveṣa-samutthena O scion of Bharata, O conqueror of the foe, all
dvandva-mohena bhārata living entities are born into delusion,
sarva-bhūtāni sammohaḿ bewildered by dualities arisen from desire and
sarge yānti parantapa hate.
BG 7.28 yeṣāḿ tv anta-gataḿ pāpaḿ Persons who have acted piously in previous
janānāḿ puṇya-karmaṇām lives and in this life and whose sinful actions
te dvandva-moha-nirmuktā are completely eradicated are freed from the
bhajante māḿ dṛḍha-vratāḥ dualities of delusion, and they engage
themselves in My service with determination.
BG 7.29 jarā-maraṇa-mokṣāya Intelligent persons who are endeavoring for
mām āśritya yatanti ye liberation from old age and death take refuge
te brahma tad viduḥ kṛtsnam in Me in devotional service. They are actually
adhyātmaḿ karma cākhilam Brahman because they entirely know
everything about transcendental activities.
BG 7.30 sādhibhūtādhidaivaḿ māḿ Those in full consciousness of Me, who know
sādhiyajñaḿ ca ye viduḥ Me, the Supreme Lord, to be the governing
prayāṇa-kāle 'pi ca māḿ principle of the material manifestation, of the
te vidur yukta-cetasaḥ demigods, and of all methods of sacrifice, can
understand and know Me, the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, even at the time of
death.
