Chapter 3:Karma-yoga

Atahah Trityo Adhyayah

# Verse Translation
BG 3.1 arjuna uvāca Arjuna said O Janārdana, O Keśava, why do You want to
jyāyasī cet karmaṇas te engage me in this ghastly warfare, if You think that
matā buddhir janārdana intelligence is better than fruitive work?
tat kiḿ karmaṇi ghore māḿ
niyojayasi keśava
BG 3.2 vyāmiśreṇeva vākyena My intelligence is bewildered by Your equivocal
buddhiḿ mohayasīva me instructions. Therefore, please tell me decisively which
tad ekaḿ vada niścitya will be most beneficial for me.
yena śreyo 'ham āpnuyām
BG 3.3 na karmaṇām anārambhān The Supreme Personality of Godhead said O sinless
naiṣkarmyaḿ puruṣo 'śnute Arjuna, I have already explained that there are two classes
na ca sannyasanād eva of men who try to realize the self. Some are inclined to
siddhiḿ samadhigacchati understand it by empirical, philosophical speculation, and
others by devotional service.
BG 3.4 na hi kaścit kṣaṇam api Not by merely abstaining from work can one achieve
jātu tiṣṭhaty akarma-kṛt freedom from reaction, nor by renunciation alone can one
kāryate hy avaśaḥ karma attain perfection.
sarvaḥ prakṛti-jair guṇaiḥ
BG 3.5 karmendriyāṇi saḿyamya Everyone is forced to act helplessly according to the
ya āste manasā smaran qualities he has acquired from the modes of material
indriyārthān vimūḍhātmā nature; therefore no one can refrain from doing something,
mithyācāraḥ sa ucyate not even for a moment.
BG 3.6 yas tv indriyāṇi manasā One who restrains the senses of action but whose mind
niyamyārabhate 'rjuna dwells on sense objects certainly deludes himself and is
karmendriyaiḥ karma-yogam called a pretender.
asaktaḥ sa viśiṣyate
BG 3.7 yas tv indriyāṇi manasā On the other hand, if a sincere person tries to control the
niyamyārabhate 'rjuna active senses by the mind and begins karma-yoga [in
karmendriyaiḥ karma-yogam Kṛṣṇa consciousness] without attachment, he is by far
asaktaḥ sa viśiṣyate superior.
BG 3.8 niyataḿ kuru karma tvaḿ Perform your prescribed duty, for doing so is better than
arma jyāyo hy akarmaṇaḥ not working. One cannot even maintain one's physical
śarīra-yātrāpi ca te body without work.
na prasiddhyed akarmaṇaḥ
BG 3.9 yajñārthāt karmaṇo 'nyatra Work done as a sacrifice for Viṣṇu has to be performed,
loko 'yaḿ karma-bandhanaḥ otherwise work causes bondage in this material world.
tad-arthaḿ karma kaunteya Therefore, O son of Kuntī, perform your prescribed duties
mukta-sańgaḥ samācara for His satisfaction, and in that way you will always
remain free from bondage

BG saha-yajñāḥ prajāḥ sṛṣṭvā In the beginning of creation, the Lord of all creatures sent
3.10 purovāca prajāpatiḥ forth generations of men and demigods, along with
anena prasaviṣyadhvam sacrifices for Viṣṇu, and blessed them by saying, "Be thou
eṣa vo 'stv iṣṭa-kāma-dhuk happy by this yajña [sacrifice] because its performance
will bestow upon you everything desirable for living
happily and achieving liberation."
BG devān bhāvayatānena The demigods, being pleased by sacrifices, will also please
3.11 te devā bhāvayantu vaḥ you, and thus, by cooperation between men and demigods,
parasparaḿ bhāvayantaḥ prosperity will reign for all.
śreyaḥ param avāpsyatha
BG iṣṭān bhogān hi vo devā In charge of the various necessities of life, the demigods,
3.12 dāsyante yajña-bhāvitāḥ being satisfied by the performance of yajña [sacrifice],
tair dattān apradāyaibhyo will supply all necessities to you. But he who enjoys such
yo bhuńkte stena eva saḥ gifts without offering them to the demigods in return is
certainly a thief.
BG yajña-śiṣṭāśinaḥ santo The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of
3.13 mucyante sarva-kilbiṣaiḥ sins because they eat food which is offered first for
bhuñjate te tv aghaḿ pāpā sacrifice. Others, who prepare food for personal sense
ye pacanty ātma-kāraṇāt enjoyment, verily eat only sin.
BG annād bhavanti bhūtāni All living bodies subsist on food grains, which are
3.14 parjanyād anna-sambhavaḥ produced from rains. Rains are produced by performance
yajñād bhavati parjanyo of yajña [sacrifice], and yajña is born of prescribed duties.
yajñaḥ karma-samudbhavaḥ
BG karma brahmodbhavaḿ viddhi Regulated activities are prescribed in the Vedas, and the
3.15 brahmākṣara-samudbhavam Vedas are directly manifested from the Supreme
tasmāt sarva-gataḿ brahma Personality of Godhead. Consequently the all-pervading
nityaḿ yajñe pratiṣṭhitam Transcendence is eternally situated in acts of sacrifice.
BG evaḿ pravartitaḿ cakraḿ My dear Arjuna, one who does not follow in human life
3.16 nānuvartayatīha yaḥ the cycle of sacrifice thus established by the Vedas
aghāyur indriyārāmo certainly leads a life full of sin. Living only for the
moghaḿ pārtha sa jīvati satisfaction of the senses, such a person lives in vain.
BG yas tv ātma-ratir eva syād But for one who takes pleasure in the self, whose human
3.17 ātma-tṛptaś ca mānavaḥ life is one of self-realization, and who is satisfied in the
ātmany eva ca santuṣṭas self only, fully satiated — for him there is no duty.
tasya kāryaḿ na vidyate
BG naiva tasya kṛtenārtho A self-realized man has no purpose to fulfill in the
3.18 nākṛteneha kaścana discharge of his prescribed duties, nor has he any reason
na cāsya sarva-bhūteṣu not to perform such work. Nor has he any need to depend
kaścid artha-vyapāśrayaḥ on any other living being.
BG tasmād asaktaḥ satataḿ Therefore, without being attached to the fruits of activities,
3.19 kāryaḿ karma samācara one should act as a matter of duty, for by working without
asakto hy ācaran karma attachment one attains the Supreme.
param āpnoti pūruṣaḥ

BG karmaṇaiva hi saḿsiddhim Kings such as Janaka attained perfection solely by
3.20 āsthitā janakādayaḥ performance of prescribed duties. Therefore, just for the
loka-sańgraham evāpi sake of educating the people in general, you should
sampaśyan kartum arhasi perform your work.
BG yad yad ācarati śreṣṭhas Whatever action a great man performs, common men
3.21 tat tad evetaro janaḥ follow. And whatever standards he sets by exemplary acts,
sa yat pramāṇaḿ kurute all the world pursues.
lokas tad anuvartate
BG na me pārthāsti kartavyaḿ O son of Pṛthā, there is no work prescribed for Me within
3.22 triṣu lokeṣu kiñcana all the three planetary systems. Nor am I in want of
nānavāptam avāptavyaḿ anything, nor have I a need to obtain anything — and yet I
varta eva ca karmaṇi am engaged in prescribed duties.
BG yadi hy ahaḿ na varteyaḿ For if I ever failed to engage in carefully performing
3.23 jātu karmaṇy atandritaḥ prescribed duties, O Pārtha, certainly all men would
mama vartmānuvartante follow My path.
manuṣyāḥ pārtha sarvaśaḥ
BG utsīdeyur ime lokā If I did not perform prescribed duties, all these worlds
3.24 na kuryāḿ karma ced aham would be put to ruination. I would be the cause of creating
sańkarasya ca kartā syām unwanted population, and I would thereby destroy the
upahanyām imāḥ prajāḥ peace of all living beings.
BG saktāḥ karmaṇy avidvāḿso As the ignorant perform their duties with attachment to
3.25 yathā kurvanti bhārata results, the learned may similarly act, but without
kuryād vidvāḿs tathāsaktaś attachment, for the sake of leading people on the right
cikīrṣur loka-sańgraham path.
BG na buddhi-bhedaḿ janayed So as not to disrupt the minds of ignorant men attached to
3.26 ajñānāḿ karma-sańginām the fruitive results of prescribed duties, a learned person
joṣayet sarva-karmāṇi should not induce them to stop work. Rather, by working
vidvān yuktaḥ samācaran in the spirit of devotion, he should engage them in all sorts
of activities [for the gradual development of Kṛṣṇa
consciousness].
BG prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni The spirit soul bewildered by the influence of false ego
3.27 guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ thinks himself the doer of activities that are in actuality
ahańkāra-vimūḍhātmā carried out by the three modes of material nature.
kartāham iti manyate
BG tattva-vit tu mahā-bāho One who is in knowledge of the Absolute Truth, O
3.28 guṇa-karma-vibhāgayoḥ mighty-armed, does not engage himself in the senses and
guṇā guṇeṣu vartanta sense gratification, knowing well the differences between
iti matvā na sajjate work in devotion and work for fruitive results.
BG prakṛter guṇa-sammūḍhāḥ Bewildered by the modes of material nature, the ignorant
3.29 sajjante guṇa-karmasu fully engage themselves in material activities and become
tān akṛtsna-vido mandān attached. But the wise should not unsettle them, although
kṛtsna-vin na vicālayet these duties are inferior due to the performers' lack of
knowledge.
BG mayi sarvāṇi karmāṇi Therefore, O Arjuna, surrendering all your works unto
3.30 sannyasyādhyātma-cetasā Me, with full knowledge of Me, without desires for profit,
nirāśīr nirmamo bhūtvā with no claims to proprietorship, and free from lethargy,
yudhyasva vigata-jvaraḥ fight.

# Verse Translation
BG ye me matam idaḿ nityam Those persons who execute their duties according to My
3.31 anutiṣṭhanti mānavāḥ injunctions and who follow this teaching faithfully,
śraddhāvanto 'nasūyanto without envy, become free from the bondage of fruitive
mucyante te 'pi karmabhiḥ actions.
BG ye tv etad abhyasūyanto But those who, out of envy, disregard these teachings and
3.32 nānutiṣṭhanti me matam do not follow them are to be considered bereft of all
sarva-jñāna-vimūḍhāḿs tān knowledge, befooled, and ruined in their endeavors for
viddhi naṣṭān acetasaḥ perfection.
BG sadṛśaḿ ceṣṭate svasyāḥ Even a man of knowledge acts according to his own
3.33 prakṛter jñānavān api nature, for everyone follows the nature he has acquired
prakṛtiḿ yānti bhūtāni from the three modes. What can repression accomplish?
nigrahaḥ kiḿ kariṣyati
BG indriyasyendriyasyārthe There are principles to regulate attachment and aversion
3.34 rāga-dveṣau vyavasthitau pertaining to the senses and their objects. One should not
tayor na vaśam āgacchet come under the control of such attachment and aversion,
tau hy asya paripanthinau because they are stumbling blocks on the path of self-
realization.
BG śreyān sva-dharmo viguṇaḥ It is far better to discharge one's prescribed duties, even
3.35 para-dharmāt sv-anuṣṭhitāt though faultily, than another's duties perfectly. Destruction
sva-dharme nidhanaḿ śreyaḥ in the course of performing one's own duty is better than
para-dharmo bhayāvahaḥ engaging in another's duties, for to follow another's path is
dangerous.
BG arjuna uvāca Arjuna said O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, by what is one
3.36 atha kena prayukto 'yaḿ impelled to sinful acts, even unwillingly, as if engaged by
pāpaḿ carati pūruṣaḥ force?
anicchann api vārṣṇeya
balād iva niyojitaḥ

BG śrī-bhagavān uvāca The Supreme Personality of Godhead said It is lust only,


3.37 kāma eṣa krodha eṣa Arjuna, which is born of contact with the material mode of
rajo-guṇa-samudbhavaḥ passion and later transformed into wrath, and which is the
mahāśano mahā-pāpmā all-devouring sinful enemy of this world.
viddhy enam iha vairiṇam
BG dhūmenāvriyate vahnir As fire is covered by smoke, as a mirror is covered by
3.38 yathādarśo malena ca dust, or as the embryo is covered by the womb, the living
yatholbenāvṛto garbhas entity is similarly covered by different degrees of this lust.
tathā tenedam āvṛtam

BG āvṛtaḿ jñānam etena Thus the wise living entity's pure consciousness becomes
3.39 jñānino nitya-vairiṇā covered by his eternal enemy in the form of lust, which is
kāma-rūpeṇa kaunteya never satisfied and which burns like fire.
duṣpūreṇānalena ca
BG indriyāṇi mano buddhir The senses, the mind and the intelligence are the sitting
3.40 asyādhiṣṭhānam ucyate places of this lust. Through them lust covers the real
etair vimohayaty eṣa knowledge of the living entity and bewilders him.
jñānam āvṛtya dehinam

BG tasmāt tvam indriyāṇy ādau Therefore, O Arjuna, best of the Bhāratas, in the very
3.41 niyamya bharatarṣabha beginning curb this great symbol of sin [lust] by regulating
pāpmānaḿ prajahi hy enaḿ the senses, and slay this destroyer of knowledge and self-
jñāna-vijñāna-nāśanam realization.
BG indriyāṇi parāṇy āhur The working senses are superior to dull matter; mind is
3.42 indriyebhyaḥ paraḿ manaḥ higher than the senses; intelligence is still higher than the
manasas tu parā buddhir mind; and he [the soul] is even higher than the
yo buddheḥ paratas tu saḥ intelligence.
BG evaḿ buddheḥ paraḿ buddhvā Thus knowing oneself to be transcendental to the material
3.43 saḿstabhyātmānam ātmanā senses, mind and intelligence, O mighty-armed Arjuna,
jahi śatruḿ mahā-bāho one should steady the mind by deliberate spiritual
kāma-rūpaḿ durāsadam intelligence [Kṛṣṇa consciousness] and thus — by spiritual
strength — conquer this insatiable enemy known as lust.
