PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Fitness Junkies is a new elite Gym that has been recently developed in Jamaica with
Branches in Kingston, Spanish Town and Montego Bay. Weight watchers from all across the
country have been targeted since the opening of the first location in Ligunea, St Andrew. As the
gym continues to grow in membership, the manual record keeping has become inadequate in
managing the day to day transactions within the business. Customers from time to time return to
request information such as their membership expiration date having lost their receipts and when
the books are sent to the accountant, this information becomes unavailable. As a result of this and
other issues, the owner of the gym is requesting that a suitable measure be put in place to allow for
better management of the affairs of the gym.

The Marketing team at the gym has included some attractive rates and benefit packages and
as such has advertised special rates for membership and exclusiveness. The team has granted a
special rate for civil servants which include all government workers. Additionally, they have
instituted a AIC membership program where members have access to a personal trainer. All other
members have to pay for a personal trainer if they so desire. The membership types are therefore:
STU – Students, PRV- private members, CSV – Civil Servants and AIC – All inclusive members.
The base monthly charges for each of the members are outlined below. Please bear in mind that
private members and civil servants may choose to pay for a personal trainer at their monthly
renewal at a cost of USD $65.00. In addition, to the membership fee, members are required to pay a
minimum fee of USD $4.75 for each use of the gym.

Member Type Amount

STU USD $45.75

CSV JMD $75.75

PRV USD $100.00

AIC USD $200.00

You have been contracted to utilize suitable word-processing, spreadsheet, database

management as well as programming application to design and implement computer-based
solutions to the tasks involved in the management of membership and payment details. The owner
would like to first see a simulation of the process before giving the go ahead to implement. The
prototype of the new system should be done with a sample of the current members. If the systems
that you design prove to be effective, it will be implemented promptly.

SPREADSHEET
The owner of Fitness Junkies Gym has mandated that you design a spreadsheet that will
accept pertinent data from the three locations on customers which will include: their personal
information, gym usage and payment information as well as keep track of the expenses that the
gym incurs over the period. To properly track the information being used, the owner has asked
that you only use information for those persons who joined between October 1 and December 31,
2018. The Spreadsheet should also track the day to day activities of the Gym over these four
months.

TASK A
1. Open Excel and save as YourLastName_YourFirstName_Fitness_Junkies.
2. Change the page size to legal and the orientation to landscape.
3. Insert your full name as a header (right section)
4. Rename Sheet 1 to Members Info that will record the following data for each Member: ID
Number (Which is a 6 character code which begins with their membership type, Eg
PRV635), Title. Last Name, First Name, Address, Parish, Telephone, Gender and
Membership Code and Gym Location.
5. In row 1, add an appropriate sheet heading for the information.
6. Populate the sheet with ten (10) persons per location.
7. The Sheet should be sorted by Location (Ascending Order), then by Last Name, Then by First
name.

TASK B
8. Move on to a new sheet in your workbook, rename the sheet to October.
9. Change the page size to legal and the orientation to landscape.
10. Insert your full name as a header (right section)
11. Using the information in the Members Info sheet, insert the information for the members
such that it will include payment information for the month of October. The worksheet should
track: ID Number, Last name, First Name, Membership Code, Trainer (yes or no), Sessions
attended for Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 and Week 4, Total sessions, Fee due, membership fee,
Trainer Fee and the Total.

12. In another area of your worksheet, copy the table below and name it Membership. Using an
appropriate Spreadsheet feature, assign the membership fees based on the membership
code.

Membership Code Description Membership Fee

STU Student USD $45.75
CSV Civil Servant JMD $75.75
PRV Private USD $100.00
AIC All Inclusive USD $200.00

13. Insert two new columns to the right of Total and label them Discount and Final Cost
Respectively. A 5% discount of is given on the Total amount due for all students who have a
total session greater than 12 for the month. A similar discount of 3% is given to Private
members who have a total session greater than 20 for the month. The Final Cost (USD) is
calculated as total – discount.

14. Some members opt to pay their totals in Jamaican dollar (JMD) insert another column to
compute this Final Cost (JMD) at a rate of USD $1.00 : JMD $120.00.

15. Be sure to compute all column and row total where applicable. You are also required to add
formatting features as is necessary.

16. Save all the work and name the worksheet October.

TASK C
17. Change the page size to legal and the orientation to landscape.
18. Insert your full name as a header (right section)
19. On a new worksheet copy the headings used in the October spreadsheet and record the
information on all the members of the Gym for the month of November.

29. Generate an appropriate chart to show what portion of the total final cost is contributed by
user fees, membership fees and trainer fee. Include appropriate labels for your chart (label your
axes and put a title). Save this chart on a new sheet called Revenue.

30. Generate an appropriate chart to compare the usage of five of the members who were
extracted (in question 24). Include appropriate labels for your chart (label your axes and put a title).
Save this chart on a new sheet called Usage.
