Telling Time by 5-minute Intervals

Grade Level: 3
Subject: Math
Length of Lesson: 3 days of 45-minute lessons
Lesson Overview/Rational:
This lesson will help the students progress in telling time with an analog clock.
Standard:
Michigan K-12 Standards Mathematics
 Measurement and Data p.20
o 2.MD.7 Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks using 5
minutes using a.m. and p.m.
Learning Objectives:
 To be able to identify the minute and the hour hand.
 To be able to count by 5’s.
 Students will be able to correctly read an analog clock.
 Students will be able to show the correct time on an analog clock that
matches the time on a digital clock.
Technology Uses:
Students will play telling time games on tablets for homework.
Materials:
 Analog template
 Brass fasteners
 Hole punch

Procedure:
 Give each student an analog template and brass fasteners.
 Have the students cut out the clock and the minute and hour hand.
 Hole punch the clocks and the minute hands and hour hands and attach
them with the brass fasteners.
 Remind students which is the minute hand and the hour hand.
 Explain how the minute hand counts by fives when passing each number.
 Do several demonstrations with the class, calling on students, before
splitting them into pairs.
Cooperative Learning:
Students will work in pairs to practice telling time by 5-minute intervals. One student will use
their analog clock they made and move the hands to a time. The other student in the pair will
write the time on the dry erase board. They can use this group work to help each other and get
more practice with the analog clocks. They will use this group work to help them better
communicate with their peers and learn to help each other.
Assessment:
While students are working in pairs students will be assessed as to who understands the concept
and extra help will be given as needed. After the third day all students will be given an exit ticket
to determine who grasps telling time with the analog clock.
