Experiment 7

Title: HALF WAVE Rectification

Aim: to investigate the use of diode in half wave rectification circuits

To investigate the use of the capacitor for smoothing of a rectified wave

Apparatus: 1 AC Power rail, 1 diode, 2 electrolyte capacitor (10µF), 10kΩ resistor, Breadboard,
1 oscilloscope, transformer, oscilloscope cables and connecting wires

Procedure 1: Half Wave Rectifier

Set up B

1. Set up apparatus as shown in figure above.

2. Connect the oscilloscope probes appropriately to obtain the
i) Input waveform from AC voltage source

ii) Output waveform (from across the load)

3. Sketch the waveforms obtained from (2) indicating the voltage and time values.
4. Repeat procedure using set up B

Data analysis:
1. Explain the differences in you observed input and output waveforms.
2. Comment the effect of the capacitor and what role does it play in the circuit.
