70 Software Upgrade
Installation Sheet
Introduction
This document provides installation instructions for upgrading
your FireWorks computer to FireWorks 1.70.
Please read the FireWorks 1.70 Software Release Notes
(P/N 3100569-EN) and these instructions in their entirety before
proceeding. The release notes are located on the FireWorks 1.70
DVD.
Recommended minimum system requirements
For optimal performance, install FireWorks 1.70 on computers
that meet the following recommended minimum system
requirements:
• Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1 or Windows XP Professional
SP3
• Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E8400
• 2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended)
• 256 MB dedicated video RAM
• DVD drive
• 250 GB hard drive
• Two or more USB 2.0 ports
• 1280 × 1024 16-bit color display
Note: Do not install FireWorks 1.70 on computers that are
running any other version of Microsoft Windows or any other
operating system — including operating systems that offer an
“XP  Emulation” mode.
FWUL4 or UL4-class computers
If you are upgrading FireWorks 1.41 or FireWorks 1.50 on an
FWUL4 or UL4-class computer, run the FireWorks SSCP utility
(system size calculation program) to determine if you could
encounter performance issues running FireWorks 1.70 with your
existing projects.
You should consider upgrading your computer hardware to meet
the system requirements above if the FireWorks SSCP utility
reveals that your FireWorks project has:
• More than 20 nodes
• More than 19,500 points (physical or virtual)
• More than 1,000 points being processed by the DARCOM
software, including points from an iO series panel
• AutoCAD (DWG) map files that are larger than 1 MB or have
more than 20 TSAs
Note: Minimizing AutoCAD (DWG) map files or converting them
into a Windows Metafile graphic (WMF) may fix some
performance issues.

To start the FireWorks SSCP utility:
1. Using Windows Explorer, open the Fireworks DVD.
2. If you are running FireWorks 1.41, open the Fireworks SSCP
1.41 folder.
— or —
If you are running FireWorks 1.5, open the Fireworks SSCP
1.5 folder.
3. Double-click FireworksStatistics.exe, and then click Start.
The SSCP report indicates the source of possible performance
issues in red.
Before you begin
The FireWorks 1.70 installation remains a multiple-step process.
During the installation, your computer may automatically restart
or you may be asked to allow a reboot. Always allow a reboot
when asked and do not remove the installation DVD (or USB
flash drive) at any time during the installation.
The installation can take up to 45 minutes or more, depending on
the speed of your computer, so be patient. Do not attempt to run
any other programs, or perform any other operations on the
computer when installing FireWorks 1.70.
Here are some things you should do before upgrading your
system:
• If your computer does not have a DVD drive, you need to
use an external DVD drive to install the software or copy the
FireWorks 1.70 DVD to a USB flash drive (4 GB or larger)
and use it to install the software.
• Make a full backup of your project and then copy the
C:\FireWorks\System\Backup folder to a safe location. For
example, to an external hard drive or to a USB flash drive.
• Install the latest Windows updates. If you do not know how,
start Windows Help and Support, and then enter the search
phrase: windows update.
• Set your Power Scheme options for Never.
• Create a restore point. If you do not know how, start
Windows Help and Support, and then enter the search
phrase: restore point.
Upgrading FireWorks 1.60
Run the FireWorks 1.70 DVD and follow the on-screen
instructions. FireWorks 1.70 installs seamlessly over previous
versions of FireWorks 1.60 software.

Upgrading FireWorks 1.50 and earlier
FireWorks 1.70 will not install over FireWorks 1.50 and earlier. If
you plan to use the same computer, you must first uninstall the
previous version of FireWorks and all of its components, and
then install FireWorks 1.70.
FireWorks 1.50 projects are compatible with FireWorks 1.70.
FireWorks 1.41 and earlier projects are not compatible. To import
a FireWorks 1.41 and earlier project into FireWorks 1.70 you
must first convert it to a FireWorks 1.50 project.

To upgrade FireWorks 1.50 and earlier:

1. Convert your project to 1.50 if it is from a previous version.
2. Verify and repair your FireWorks project until the utility
returns a message that verification was completed without
any issues.
3. Back up your FireWorks database to a safe location.
4. Using Add or Remove Programs in the Windows Control
Panel, uninstall the following programs:
• The previous version of FireWorks and, if prompted,
previous versions of Crystal Reports
• Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine
• FireWorks Remote Web Server, if installed.
5. Remove Internet Information Server (IIS), if installed.
Click Add/Remove Windows Components, and then clear
the Internet Information Server (IIS) check box.
6. Delete the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server folder.
7. Rename the C:\Fireworks folder. For example,
C:\FireWorks_old.
8. Restart the computer.
9. Install FireWorks 1.70.
Start FireWorks System Builder and restore your migrated
FireWorks 1.50 database (File > Restore a 1.5x version project).

Upgrading a previous version of FireWorks Web

Client to 1.7x
The Web Client installation program recognizes that a previous
version of Web Client is loaded and suggests removing it.
Previous versions of FireWorks Web Client may reside on the
same computer as FireWorks Web Client 1.7x, if necessary. For
example, if you are using one remote computer to monitor
multiple FireWorks installations and each installation uses a
different version of FireWorks.
Commands on the Start menu no longer refer to GE; they were
renamed to Edwards Software (Start > All Programs > Edwards
Software).
Web Client 1.50 is not compatible with FireWorks 1.70. If
FireWorks is upgraded to version 1.7x then you must also
upgrade all Web Clients to version 1.7x.
