History
• Derived from the French word ‘entreprendre’ which
means ‘to undertake’.
• French men who organized and led military
expeditions were referred to as ‘entrepreneur'.

technology savvy, creative, innovative,
dynamic, dares to be different and takes the
unexplored path.
• Extremely passionate about their work.
• They take challenges and strive to lead their
life with great success.

Women Entrepreneurship
Definition
• The term “Women Entrepreneurship” refers to an
act of business ownership and business creation
that empowers women economically increases
their economic strength & position in society.
• The Government of India has defined women
entrepreneurs as “ an enterprise owned and
controlled by women having a minimum financial
interest of 51 per cent of the capital and giving at
least 51 per cent of the employment generated in
the enterprise to women.

• Indian traditions
• Male dominated one where women are supposed
to and often compelled to depend on the male
members in their family, society or work place.
• Discrimination at work

• Women are becoming more conscious about their
rights, social position, work, career etc.

life and society has introduced a drastic change in
the life style of Indian women.

Dr. KiranMazumdar-Shaw
• Dr. KiranMazumdar-Shaw (Chairman & Managing
Director of Biocon Limited a biotechnology
company).
• She completed her post graduate studies from
Ballarat College, Melbourne University qualifying
as a master brewer.
• Kiran began her professional career working as a
trainee brewer at Carlton & United Beverages.
• After working there for four years she switched
her job to work at Biocon Biochemicals Limited
which was based in Ireland.
• Later that year she founded Biocon in India with
an initial capital of only 10,000 rupees.
• Business was not easy due to lack of funds.
• All the banks she turned to for loans were
hesitant because biotechnology was not a familiar
concept in India at that time.
• Another reason was her gender.
• A female entrepreneur was another rare idea for
Indians and one bringing in a completely new field
was even stranger.
• She even had difficulty hiring people to work for
her.
• After Biocon got an IPO in 2004, Kiran Mazumdar-
Shaw became the richest woman in India.
• Because of her strong determination, Kiran
steered her company towards growth and success.

Shaw became the richest woman in India.
• She made more than 2000 high value R&D
licensing deals from 2005 to 2010.
• Biocon was ranked as one of the leading biotech
companies worldwide and the 7thbiggest
biotechnology employer in the world.
