What’s in a Name? How the Ancient Israelites Settled in Ghana

Dr. Joseph Nii Abekar Mensah traces the history of
Jewish migration in his landmark book Traditions
and Customs of Gadangmes of Ghana: Descendants
of Authentic Biblical Hebrew Israelites.

GaDangmes of Ghana have been described as

descendants of the biblical Hebrew Israelites, whose
ancestors once reigned supreme in the motherland.
The ancestors of the GaDangmes were ruled by
Wulomei (The High Priesthood). GaDangmes claim
through their oral history that they are descendants of
ancient Hebrew Israelites, and call themselves
Yudafoi, meaning they are Jews. The book discusses
GaDangme custom and traditions, including the
Homowo Festival, circumcision, and outdooring
(sanctification) of the child after birth, all traditions
of Hebraic origins. This history book traces the
origins of GaDangmes and their migration from
ancient Israel to Ghana following the attack on Israel
by the Assyrians about 700 years before Christ.

GaDangmes names read like genetic markers and are

scattered throughout The Old Testament, including
GaDangmes towns and villages that bear Hebrew names. Read this fascinating book to
understand the culture that helped shape modern Ghana.
