Juneteenth Celebration - Zoom Meeting

Meeting Details: Thursday, June 18th at 6pm

Facilitators: Christie Tran, Alliniece Andino, Jaylyn Jones, and Sara Foppiano

Purpose: To ensure that participants in the Juneteenth Celebration event are aware of safety protocols,
including social distancing, personal health and well-being, site accessibility, and more.

Agenda:

- Parking: Available at River Ridge High School. Overflow parking available at Costco parking lot. Limited
spaces are available in the lot behind Beau Legs - please reserve these spaces for business customers
and participants with mobility needs.
- Check In: A table will be set in the parking lot of River Ridge High School to greet participants as they
arrive. At this location you will be able to:
- Check out signs
- Collect a yellow “PeaceKeeper” button, if that is a role you have volunteered to undertake
- Review expectations for social distancing, conduct, and participation
- PeaceKeepers: These designated volunteers will be wearing large yellow buttons. They will be
responsible for communicating with the event leaders, relaying messages, and ensuring the overall
safety of the event. They will direct social distancing, as well as moderate and de-escalate any
interactions with counter protestors or law enforcement.
- Sign Waving: Participants will be situated along Martin Way between Hoh Street SE and River Ridge
Drive SE. Overflow sign waving (if needed) will continue West on Martin as long as needed to
accomodate 6 feet distancing between participants.
- Personal Preparation: Wear comfortable shoes for walking and standing. Dress for warm weather
(forecast is 80 degrees). Pack a backpack with water, snacks, sunscreen, basic first aid supplies, hand
sanitizer, PPE, and other necessary items. Take other precautions such as fully charging your phone,
having a secure plan for transportation home, and coming with a buddy (or letting someone know of
your whereabouts).
- Covid 19 Protocols: Participants are expected to wear masks and stand 6 feet apart. There is ample
space along Martin Way, so 6 feet distancing should not be a problem. We will try to make hand
sanitizer available at the check in and first aid stations, but please bring your own if you have some. If
you are feeling ill, rather than sign waving in person, we encourage you to participate in other ways:
promote on social media, spread the word among family and friends, and make a personal
commitment to ongoing anti-racist education and action.
- Donations: We are accepting donations of water, snacks, basic first aid supplies, PPE, and other items
that will be beneficial to participants. If you are in a position to bring items to share with the group, or
you have connections with a local business who is willing to donate, please do so. Thank you!
- Water, snacks, and first aid station: Centrally located within the sign waving on Martin Way there will
be tables with water, snacks, first aid supplies, and garbage bags for litter.
- Press/media inquiries: Please refer all press/media inquiries to the designated spokespersons (TBD).
We want to ensure that our message is clear, concise, and consistent. 4 points have been outlined by
the RRHS BSU:
1. We want North Thurston Public Schools to create Black History and Ethnic Studies courses
2. We want North Thurston Public Schools to hire and retain more Black teachers and educators
3. We want North Thurston Public Schools to end zero-tolerance discipline
4. We want North Thurston Public Schools to fund more counselors and services, not cops
- Atmosphere: We are promoting this as a family-friendly, peaceful, and positive event. Please introduce
yourself to other participants! Present a welcoming atmosphere. This is an opportunity to network,
make community connections, and have conversations about the importance of solidarity and action.
This sign-waving event is just the beginning - please use this event as a starting point to build
connections with others and commit to ongoing anti-racist action. There is much work to be done.
- Litter: There are garbage cans in the RRHS parking lot. Please remove any litter from the sign waving
area and dispose of it in the garbage cans when you leave the event.
- Situational awareness: Be aware of your surroundings, and speak up if something doesn’t feel right.
Let a designated PeaceKeeper (yellow button) know if you sense something that feels off. This could
include the presence of perceived counter protestors, law enforcement, or other unsafe or suspicious
activity. PeaceKeepers will acknowledge and address your concerns and act promptly to ensure the
safety of our participants.
- Law enforcement: In the event that law enforcement does arrive, please let the designated
PeaceKeepers act as moderators. We do not want any participants to be placed in an uncomfortable or
unsafe situation. Our PeaceKeepers will be prepared to communicate with law enforcement and
emphasize deescalation and clear communication.
- Emergency Protocol: In the event of an unsafe, urgent emergency situation, two businesses have
offered to be places of refuge. If you are on the north side of Martin Way, please seek shelter in
Inferno’s Pizza. If you are on the South side of Martin Way, please seek shelter in Mud Bay.
- Additional Questions: We will dedicate time at the Zoom meeting to honor any additional questions,
concerns, or feedback you have.
