Degree in Law:1

The rules relating to obtaining a degree in law can be divided into two parts. The first part deals
with persons obtaining law degree before the enactment of the statute. A person will he deemed
eligible if he obtained the degree before August 15, 1947 from any University from any area
which was comprised before that date within India as defined by the Government of India Act,
1935 and before March 12, 1961 from any University in the territory of India. The second part
deals with persons obtaining the degree after enactment of the qatutc. A person will be deemed
to have obtained the degree after March 12, 1967, if he:

A) Undergoes a three year law course from any University in India which was recognized for the
purpose of this Act by the Bar Council of India;

b) After undergoing a course of study in law, the duration of which is not less than two academic
years commencing from the academic year 1967-68 or any earlier academic year from any
University in India which is recognized for the purpose of this Act by the BCI;

c) Obtains a degree from any University outside the territory of India, if the degree is recognized
for the purpose of this Act by the BCI or

d) Fulfils such other conditions as may be specified in the rules made by SBC under this Chapter

Under the Rules of Legal Education, 2008 the term "Bachelor degree in law means and
includes:

(i) A degree in law conferred by an University which has been recognized by the Bar Council of
India for the purpose of the Act and includes a bachelor degree in law after any bachelor degree
in science, arts, commerce, engineering, medicine, or any other discipline of a University for a
period of study not less than three years or an integrated bachelor degree combining the course
of a first bachelor degree in any subject and also the law running together in concert and
compression for not less than a period of five years after 10+2 or 11+1 courses as the case may
be.

The term "Integrated Degree course in law" means double degree course bachelor degree in any
branch of knowledge prosecuted comprising the simultaneously with the Degree course in law
in such an integrated manner as may be designed by the University concerned for a continuous
period of not less than five years.
