Solid waste will be managed using the Aerated Static Pile Composting (ASP)
Systems.
5.1 Size
On average a person produces 2.68 kg per day[ CITATION Mun \l 17417 ].. Therefore,
2.68 kg × 8 persons on the island = 21.44 kg per day. 21.44 kg × 365 days × 3 years = 23
476.8 kg of waste for 3 years on the island. Therefore, there will be 6 Aerated Static Pile
Composting (ASP) Systems. Each will be the size of 1 cubic metre which can fill in waste
about 1800 kg. A complete composting process would take 3 months then the ASP can be
used to fill in new waste. If the capacity of waste we produce is more than expected then a
new ASP can be built as it uses simple materials that is wood and pipe. Moreover, the waste
produced from the livestock will be many and that means there will be the increasing of ASP
item.
5.2 Distance
Solid waste must be managed far from streams, wells, and houses. Therefore,
environment pollution will be avoided.
Firstly, a box like container will be built using woods. 2 holes at the bottom corner to
fit in pipes in order to supply oxygen when composting waste.
Next, the pipes in the box is sealed but 2 little holes will be hollowed at the end so
there is a way the oxygen can flow in. At the back, the pipe from the ASP container will
joined and connected to another little box. In the box there is a little fan that functions to feed
in oxygen. The example is like in the figure above, except the ASP we building is 6 in total.
Therefore, there will be 6 pipe streams joining into a single pipe and connected to the fan.
The waste is then will be covered with a lid made from wood to let the waste compost.
5.3.1 Overview
Fan
5.3.2 Dimensions
The fan will be come with complete set with its housing. Therefore, there is no need
on the dimensions of the fan housing. The composting container is fully made out of wood.
The lid to cover this container is also made out of wood. Another method is by covering with
clothing.
5.4 Mechanics
Firstly, wood chips will be put in as bulk to let air spread into the composting
components. After that, solid wastes such as food scraps, manure, livestock waste and
butcher house waste is filled into the container. When the container is filled, the container
then can be closed. When composting, the fan will be turned on for supply of oxygen as it is
aerobic composting. The fan is turned on for 5 minutes every hour. Supplying to much air
can cause the pile to dried out. The composting process will be complete in 3 months. Then,
the product can be used as compost for plant cultivation.
5.5 Costing
Other wastes such as metal, tin, and plastic waste is not included as there will be
no these kind of wastes will be bring to the island. If there is that kind of waste, then further
inspection will be run. Things that can be recycled and reuse will be used optimally.
