Second Saturday Bird Walk Report

Location:​ Trails around Rocky River Nature Center, Rocky River Reservation, 
Cleveland Metroparks, 24000 Valley Pkwy, North Olmsted, OH 44070 ​Map

Results:​ 8 Birders and 44 Species

Description:​ ​The June 2020 2nd Saturday bird walk started with a cool morning, with the
temperature at 57 degrees and ended with the temperature at 64 degrees. It was windy and
sunny. We had 8 birders tally 44 species in 3 1/2 hours. It was a slow day but we had some
exciting observations. Many of the regular birds were observed. Two exceptional highlights
include a Great Blue Heron with a large fish, probably a Bullhead. We watched the Heron for
several minutes before the Heron swallowed the fish. Later down the trail we watched a
Red-tailed Hawk capture a Fox Squirrel. After several minutes, on the ground, the Hawk flew,
with the squirrel in its talons, landed on a unobstructed perch, sat for several minutes before
flying away with its prey dangling from its talons.​ ​-​ Report by Bill Deininger.
