Title of Experience: Sketch-A-Day
Competency/Competencies: Creativity
Expected Start Date: June 5, 2019
Expected End Date: August 5, 2019

Personal Connection
Section must include:
• Explanation of why this experience matters to you
• Explanation of how this experience will help you progress toward becoming a global citizen scholar

This Experience matters to me because as an Architecture major, it’s important to practice the art of sketching,
in order to be better able to convey my ideas to my professors and peers. This experience will help me progress
towards becoming a global citizen scholar because even though Architects in the Design field are not required
to know how to sketch, if I ever want to transfer my skills as an Architect into the Film/Set Design Industry I’m
going to need to know how to portray my ideas for a space through a clean and quick sketch.

Abstract
Section must include:
• Brief description of the experience and explanation of how you will reach the 75+ hours requirement
• Description of risks (if any) inherent in this experience and safety precautions you will take
• Itinerary, including locations and dates, for any travel experience

For this experience I plan on doing two, 20-min sketches of whatever building/space I see, every day. I’ll take an extra
10 minutes for each sketch to jot down some notes on how I could improve those sketches. If you add up the times, I
should be doing two, half-hour sessions of drawing/note-taking every day. In addition, once every two weeks I will
show the progression of my work to my Studio Professor and ask him/her what suggestions they might have for me to
improve my sketches.

There are no risks that I need to take into consideration besides possible papercuts.
There is no travel involved for sketching.

Advisor
Section must include:
• Experience advisor name and contact information
• Description of why advisor was selected
• Specific plans to engage with advisor

Advisor: Melanie Swick*

Email: swickmm@ucmail.uc.edu
Phone: 513-556-6426

I chose Melanie because she is my former Studio Professor. She’s agreed to meet with me once every 2 weeks, to briefly
discuss my sketchbook.
*My advisor might change after the May 5th Proposal deadline, if I get a different professor for my Summer Studio
Courses.

Goals Related to Competency/Competencies:

Section must include:
• Two specific and measurable experience goals related to chosen competency/competencies outlining the
intended results/outcomes/achievements
• Two specific personal goals related to chosen competency/competencies outlining how you hope to grow as a
result of this experience
• Examples of activities and explanation of how each will assist in the progress toward the goals

One goal relating to Experience is to be able to sketch spaces that I observe in a clean and easy to understand way. The
biggest issue I have with my sketches right now is how hairy my lines are when I make them. I need to work on creating
clean, confident lines when I sketch so that my drawings look legible. Another goal relating to Experience is to increase
the speed at which I sketch spaces that I observe. I tend to overthink things or zone-out when I sketch, so that
sometimes when I step back I realize that I’d started detailing parts that don’t need to be detailed in order to
communicate my ideas. I want to get better at staying focused on my drawing for shorter periods of time so that the
drawing stays purposeful and on topic with what I have to say.

One Personal goal I have is to learn to see sketching as a tool to share my ideas rather than an additional task I have
to push myself through to make my idea “look presentable” to my peers. The idea of sketching has always intimidated
me, but this experience will force me to get over my fear and to stop over-thinking my design ideas. Another Personal
goal is to start managing my time more consistently on a day-to-day basis. The consistency of this experience might just
give me enough structure in my day for me to be the most productive I can be.

Academic Resources Connected to the Goals

Section must include:
• Two to three academic resources connected to your goals
• Title and author of each resource
• Description of how resources will help make progress toward the goals

Note: Academic resources are professional/academic works that can be used to assist your understanding of the topic.
Some examples are books, research journals, documentaries, or videos.

“Architectural Graphics” By: Francis D.K. Ching

This book will give me insight on how to draw in perspective, as it relates to buildings and interior spaces.
I can also better understand how to position a subject on a paper in order to create the most
interest for the sketch.

“Architecture: Form, Space, and Order” By: Francis D.K. Ching

This book will help me understand the basic vocabulary of architectural design. In my notes after I sketch I
I can also call out these vocabularies in order to get better at using them in the context of a building.

“Operative Design: A Catalog of Spatial Verbs” By: Anthony di Mari

This book will help me understand the basic vocabulary of interior design. In my notes after I sketch I
I can also call out these vocabularies in order to get better at using them in the context of a building.

On-going Reflection
Section must include:
• Method for ongoing reflection
• List questions you plan to ask yourself to gauge your growth related to your goals as well as understanding of
the selected competency/competencies

The on-going reflection should help you process the experience and progress toward the goals you have identified.
Note: A variety of methods can be used for reflection. Some examples are videos, drawings, blogs, songs, and journals.

Every time I sketch I’ll take 10 minutes to jot down notes/bullet points on what to improve in my sketches. Once every 2
weeks, I will meet up with my studio professor and let him/her look at my sketches and give me suggestions on how to
improve them.

Sharing Your Learning

Section must include:
• At least one method to actively share what you learned focused on growth connected to
competency/competencies
• A specific audience and why the audience was selected

While social media can be an effective platform for sharing, only posting on your learning portfolio or social media
account(s) does not reach a targeted audience. Consider signing up for the Global Citizen Scholar Showcase as a
method of sharing.

I’ll share my sketchbook at the Global Citizen Scholar Showcase.
