:Introduction

Water absorption test on bricks are conducted to determine

durability property of bricks such as degree of burning, quality
.and behavior of bricks in weathering

A brick with water absorption of less than 7% provides better

resistance to damage by freezing. The degree of compactness of
bricks can be obtained by water absorption test, as water is
absorbed by pores in bricks

The water absorption by bricks increase with increase in pores.

So, the bricks, which have water absorption less than 3 percent
. .can be called as vitrified

:Procedure

.Select five bricks at random-1

Dry the specimen in a drying oven at a -2
.temparature of 110’C to 115’C for 24hrs
Remove the Bricks from the oven and cool -3
them to room temperature and obtain it’s weight M1(kg)
Immerse the five bricks completely in water -4
.for 24hrs
Remove the specimen and wipe out any traces -5
.of water with a damp cloth and weigh the specimen
within three minutes after it’s removal from -6
.water, Let its weight be M2 (kg)
The weight of samples were taken before and -7
after the samples were immersed in the tank in order to
determine the percentage of the water absorption given
:by the following formul

Take the Average Value of water absorption--8

Questions and Answers:

Why is water absorption of bricks important

Porosity is the ability to release and absorb moisture, and it

is important and useful properties of brick. When brick is

soaked in water, the brick absorbs water and release air so

that when it is used in masonry and placed over the wet

mortar, it will no more absorb any water from the wet

mortar

?How do you test water absorption

For the water absorption test, the specimens are dried in an

oven for a specified time and temperature and then placed in

a desiccator to cool. Immediately upon cooling the specimens

are weighed. The material is then emerged in water at

agreed upon conditions, often 23°C for 24 hours or until

equilibrium
(6)

How do you stop water from absorbing bricks?

Mortar is also able to absorb water and a water repellent

will stop it from doing so. A silane/siloxane water repellent

works by being absorbed into the brick, below the surface.

Once there it reacts with the free-lime content that is present

in both the brick

What should You do When Result is not in Range of -

?Acceptance Criteria

If the water absorption test of bricks has failed, obvious

reasons are poor manufacturing and clay composition,

insufficient burning etc. and If brick fails in water

absorption than never ever use such bricks because you

can’t resolve the problem by any treatment or remedies in

.future

Note:

The water absorption of bricks is not related directly to the

porosity owing to the nature of pores themselves. Some of
Pores may be through pores which permit air to escape in
absorption tests and allow free passage of water in
absorption tests, but other are completely seated and
inaccessible to water under ordinary conditions. For this
reason it is seldom possible to fill more than about three
quarters of pores by simple immersion in cold water. For
measuring total absorption the boiling method is adpted.
More is the water absorption capacity weaker is the brick
and vice versa.
