Social and Emotional Learning Approach Welcome Families and Friends to
As a former preschool teacher, I have come to Mrs. Armas’s Kindergarten
believe that Social and Emotional Learning is
just as important in the classroom as

mathematics, history, reading, writing, and
science. That is why I choose to incorporate
SEL, or Social and Emotional Learning
techniques in my classroom. You will often
hear me refer to my students as “friends”, as I
want to promote a sense of community and
friendship early on in the classroom. I chose
this approach because it creates an “equal and
supportive learning enviroment for all
students”(CASEL). It acknowledges student’s
diversity and learning styles and also addresses
behavioral concerns.

Through SEL practices your child will learn to

Mrs. Armas’s Kindergarten Classroom Rules and Expectations

The following are a list of rules and regulations that I would plan on implementing in my future Kindergarten or Elementary classroom. I believe that

students learn best with routine and consistency. I chose to apply a social and emotional learning approach to my classroom based off of the Inspire

modules found on the Sanford Inspire National University website and Casel.org website I researched. I believe the following rules and regulations

offer a clearly defined and observable way to regulate behavior and have a manageable classroom.

1. Listen to the teacher and follow directions.

a. This rule will be a constant and consistent rule for my classroom. Students will be taught the “Listening Bodies” Chant and “1,2,3;

Eyes on Me” song which helps them to remember to use their listening ears, watching eyes, quiet mouths, and calm bodies. This rule

helps to direct their attention and focus on the teacher at all times.

2. Keep hands gentle and keep your body to yourself.

a. As kindergarten students, they are still learning how to self-regulate and control their emotions. This rule is a reminder that everyone

should be keeping each other safe and to not be physical with our friends. I will have a visual poster for students in the front of the

class to remind them to be kind and safe with their bodies.

3. Use kind words.

a. This is a rule that encourages respect and acceptance. Students must always think before they speak and use words that evoke kindness

and respect. I will not tolerate students being mean or bullying other friends in class.

4. Be responsible for your materials and clean up after yourself.

a. This rule requires students to be maintain their space and keep materials such as pencils, books, crayons, scissors in a clean and

useable working condition. Students must also clean their desk/table after group work, individual learning time, and at the end of the

day.

5. Use quiet voices inside.

a. This rule is specific for inside the classroom. I ask that students practice quiet voices during classroom time even during group work.

There is a visual poster of levels of quiet to loud voices and where they can be used. For example, yelling voices outside or when

someone is hurt or in a dangerous situation.

The remaining classroom rules are expectation that will be discussed as classroom procedures and policies, but not as the first five Classroom

Rules. These procedures include numbers 6-10.

6. Use the Bathroom during Breaks and only if necessary, during class learning time.

a. I will encourage students to use their breaks and transitions for bathroom time but as younger students I understand the need to use the

bathroom throughout the day. I will ask friends to be courteous to the rest of the group and respect their time as learning time.

7. In the morning put ALL personal belongings in your cubby. That is their home.

a. Backpacks, lunches, jackets should remain in cubbies throughout the day. All other needed materials such as pencils, books, and paper

should be with the students at their desk. No toys or unnecessary items from home should be brought to campus. A letter will be sent

home to parents to remind students that these items should be kept at home.

8. If you need help, all you need to do is ask!

a. As the teacher I am here to help students learn, if you have a question please raise your hand or come see me at my desk and I can help

you. We will also have “ask a friend” options for classroom learning time. We are here to learn and help each other.
9. Friends should be respectful at all times.

a. This is a follow up expectation to rule number 2 and 3. Students behavior will be monitored throughout the day and have logical

consequences for being disrespectful or mean to others this includes teachers.

10. Have fun and learn something new!

a. I have always ended my rules and expectations with “have fun and learn something new”, because I believe that students learn best

when they are having fun and experiencing something that interests them. As a teacher I want to encourage curiosity and a love of

learning in my students.
