Routh-Hurwitz Criterion Special Cases Guide

The document discusses two special cases of the Routh-Hurwitz criterion for determining stability of a system. The first case is when there is a zero only in the first column of a row. This is handled by replacing the zero with an epsilon and taking the limit as epsilon approaches zero. The second case is when there is an entire row of zeros. This is handled by differentiating the polynomial of the previous row and using the coefficients to replace the row of zeros. Two examples are provided to illustrate these cases.

Routh-Hurwitz Criterion (special cases)

1. A zero in the first column of a row

2. An entire row that consists of zeros

Zero Only in the First Column

- Replace the zero with ∈ in the 1st column
- Complete the remainder of the table and evaluate the signs of the first
column as ∈ approaches zero from the positive or negative

Example:
10
T ( s) =
s +2 s +3 s3 +6 s2 +5 s+3
5 4

Entire Row of Zeros

- Return to the row previous to the row of zeros and form an auxiliary
polynomial
- Differentiate the polynomial and use the coefficients to replace the row of
zeros
- The row previous to the row of zeros downwards t=is a test of the even
polynomial factor
10
T ( s) =
s +7 s +6 s +42 s 2 +8 s +56
5 4 3

Assignment:
20
1. T ( s) =
s + s +12 s +22 s +39 s 4 +59 s 3 +48 s2 +38 s +20
8 7 6 5

128
2. T ( s ) = 8
s +3 s +10 s +24 s + 48 s 4 +96 s3 +128 s2 +192 s+ 128
7 6 5
