COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION
• Lubrication generally involves coating surfaces with a material (grease, oil, etc.)
that has a lower coefficient of friction than the original surfaces. The coefficient of
friction is the measure of the frictional force between two surfaces in contact. It is
the relationship between the weight of an object and the force required to move
it. Coefficient of friction is determined by applying the formula:
• Greater force is required to move a body from rest (static condition) than the force
required to keep it in motion (kinetic condition). However, once a lubricated body
is in motion, less force is required to keep it in motion than if it were unlubricated.
• In simple words, the coefficient of friction is the measure of the frictional force
between two surfaces in contact.
I.- Answer the following questions about lubrication or decide if the statements are True
(T) or False (F).
1) What is lubrication?
R: is the process of maintaining a fluid film between solid surfaces to prevent their
physical contact.
7) __f__ Fluid lubricants create a film between surfaces to wear the materials.
8) __F__ Lubricants have a greater coefficient of friction than the original surfaces.
9) What is coefficient of friction?
The coefficient of friction is the measure of the frictional force between two surfaces in
contact.
