Documentation Instructions for checking and mounting of waisted screws

1. Instructions on torque values:

1.1 For table of torque values - see TI-No. 1902-.... in the respective Operational Instructions.

1.2 All screws and/or nuts listed in TI No. 1902-.... must only be tightened using the specified tightening
torque (and angular displacement) and only using a suitable torque wrench. During tightening fresh
engine lubricating oil must be used as a lubricant (never use molybdenum-based grease!). Apply this oil
to the clean thread and to the screw-head and nut contact surface.
Always take into account the specifications in TI No. 000-00-003!

Never use screws, nuts or washers which show defects (even slight ones) e. g. on thread or contact
faces.
When using liquid screw lockings, only use LOCTITE Nr. 243.

2. Instructions for checking and exchanging wasited screws:

After dismantling of the engine, all waisted shank screws are to be tested for absolute equality. In the
absence of suitable testing equipment or in the absence of really inadequate specialist knowledge,
especially when the cost of testing is greater than the value of the screws, then these are to be renewed.

Note: Replace also waisted screws that are unsually not dismantled during a general overhaul of the unit
(e. g. screws with counterbalance weight, fly wheel screws etc.).

2.1 The contact faces of the screw head, the transitional points and the shaft surfaces must be free of
notches, frictional corrosion or rust formation.
The cross-grinding or phosphatization of the screw-head contact surfaces must be undamaged.

2.2 The contact faces must be placed at a right angle to the thread.

2.3 Check waisted bolts for fractures.

2.4 The thread must be free of defects, such as beginning cracks, frictions, etc.

2.5 In case the requirements as per pos. No. 2.1 - 2.4 are not met, it is necessary to install new screws.
Whenever new screws are installed, replace the entire set of screws.

2.6 In case of defect main bearing, pistons or con-rods, replace all the screws in the “surroundings” and the
entire set of screws.
