VOCATIONAL TRAINING OR ACADEMIC STUDY

☘️Agree/Disagree

✅Question: Many people go to university for academic study. More people should be encouraged
to do vocational training because there is a lack of qualified workers such as electricians and
plumbers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

📚 Answer:

Many people argue that it would be better to enrol in vocational courses to learn some kind of trade
than to attend university in order to pursue academic subjects. However, I strongly believe that both
academic education and vocational training need to be given equal consideration.

There are two main reasons some people choose to pursue academic study. One reason is that there
are a lot of careers requiring higher educational qualifications, for example in accountancy, law or
medicine. These jobs need people who have specialized academic knowledge which can only be
obtained from university. Furthermore, in many nations those people who graduate from university
have an excellent chance to get well-paid jobs. They learn crucial skills such as how to approach and
tackle a challenging problem and manage complex projects. Those skills help them work
productively and efficiently.

Nevertheless, vocational education is also extremely important. To start with, some countries,
especially developed ones, are lacking skilled tradespeople, while there are too many academic
graduates, which leads to educated unemployment. This imbalance in the workforce adversely
affects the whole economy. Secondly, nowadays, more and more buildings are being constructed, so
that there is always a need for qualified workers. For example, a high-rise residential building with a
complex electrical network and plumbing system usually needs professional electricians and
plumbers, not only during the construction stage, but also afterwards for ongoing maintenance.

In conclusion, it seems to me that university degrees—as well as vocational classes—play an equally

vital role in society, as there is always an ongoing demand for tradespeople and university-educated
experts.
