Reflection

For our assignment we divided the vocabulary into five domains that are based on their

content specifications. The five domains are: I-Planning, Organizing and Managing Reading

Based on Ongoing Assessment, II-Word Analysis, III- Fluency, IV-Vocabulary, Academic

Language and Background Knowledge, and V-Comprehension. After reviewing the vocabulary

word list I was able to identify that my biggest area for review will be for planning and effectively

using assessments in the classroom. I recognized some of the terms but did not understand

their meaning nor how they should be used to inform instruction in the classroom. One of my

first resources was the book, Ready for Rica, 4

th edition by James J. Zarrillo. It is an excellent

resource covering examples of classroom assessments and everything you will see on the

RICA.

Additionally, there were some vocabulary that I just did not know so I needed to consult

additional sources in order to obtain the definitions. I found the books, Words Their Way, and

Phonics They Use to be wonderful resources for finding terms especially those related to word

analysis such as orthography. By continuing to study these texts I can gain a stronger

understanding of word analysis and fluency.

Overall, this assignment gave me a greater insight of my preparation level for the RICA. I

now know what I need to do in order to feel confident to pass the exam. Prior to this

assignment I had no idea what the RICA was really about or what it entailed. Now I feel that I

have the resources and knowledge that I need in order to be prepared.
